Abstract

1476779 Ferroelectric devices MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 20 Dec 1974 55236/74 Heading H1K [Also in Division G2] A device comprises a body 10 of ferroelectric material having two pairs of electrodes on respective opposed surfaces, at least one of the electrodes having a resistance which is responsive to temperature. In the device illustrated in Fig. 1 the electrodes 11, 12 on the major surfaces 13, 14 of the body 10 are both made of a material having either a positive or a negative temperature coefficient of resistance, the resistance variation either being a smooth function of temperature or occurring sharply at a discrete temperature lower than the Curie temperature of the body 10. Suitable selection of ambient temperature results in the electrodes 11, 12 being resistive and enables the body 10 to be polarized in direction 20 by application of a D.C. potential between electrodes 15, 16. Alteration of the temperature such that electrodes 11, 12 become conductive enables the body to be repolarized in direction 21 by the application of a D.C. potential between electrodes 11, 12. If the body 10 and/or the electrodes are made of transparent materials an electro-optical storage or display device may be provided. In particular the body 10 may be of a hot-pressed La-doped lead zirconate-titanate ceramic. If the ceramic is “coarse-grained” an electro-optical effect arises from the dependence of light scattering on orientation of the ceramic polar axis relative to the direction of incident light. If the ceramic is “fine-grained” it exhibits electrically variable birefringence. Suitable positive temperature coefficient materials for the electrodes 11, 12 are Se, (Ba, Sr, Pb)TiO 3 , ZnO-TiO 2 -NiO, paraffins, polyethylene or graphite. Suitable negative temperature coefficient materials are Si, Ge, Ag 2 S, Ag 2 S-CuS, V 2 O, VO, VO 2 , Ti 2 O 3 or isoviolanthrone. The electrodes 15, 16 may be of Au, Ag, or A1. In modifications one or both of the electrodes 11, 12 are transparent and overlie photoconductive layers, e.g. of CdS or CdSe, the application of a potential between electrodes 11, 12 while irradiating the body 10 with a light image or pattern then causing selective repolarization of the body 10 in a pattern corresponding to that of the incident light.
