Abstract
1479441 Pneumatic tyre M V HINDERKS 13 June 1974 [15 March 1973 12 March 1974] 12531/73 and 10942/74 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre and wheel assembly comprises a casing 2 e.g. a conventional tubeless tyre, an inner tube 3, and a loose, annular band 4 for preventing puncturing of the inner tube by an object e.g. a nail entering the outer casing. The spaces 10, 11 are inflated via separate valves 5, 6. Deflation of the space 10 is indicated by air pockets within the space being compressed and thus making an audible signal as the wheel revolves. The band 4 may comprise a compressible cellular material e.g. rubber or plastics reinforced by metal elements e.g. of spring steel or foil. Projections 21, 22 may be provided on the radially outer surface of the band 4 and/or on the radially inner tread surface to permit circulation of air to prevent overheating. Air pockets 31 may provide the band. Passages 23 may also provide an audible signal when space 10 is deflated. Alternatively air pockets may be provided on the casing or on the inner tube. A diaphragm 25 (Fig. 17) in the rim is exposed to view when the space 10 is inflated. An aperture covered by a transparent cap (40) (Fig. 18 not shown) enables the inner tube to bulge, when inflated, to give a visual indication of its inflated state. When the space 10 is deflated, the inner tube may expand radially and axially, or as illustrated may be prevented from, or limited in, its radial expansion by integral elements 15. The metal elements may be arranged symmetrically in the band, and the latter may be of arcuate (Fig. 8 not shown) or channel (Fig. 9 not shown) cross section.
