Abstract

1479444 Electrolysis cells IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973 4 July 1974] 44682/73 and 29683/74 Heading C7B In a diaphragm type electrolytic cell the anode, and optionally the cathode, comprises a plurality of vertical elongate parallel spaced-apart members which are arranged to form a plurality of vertical channels and in the case of an anode carry an electrocatalytically active coating, the interelectrode gap being 6mm. or less. The electrode structure may comprise blades, rods or channel members, in particular double blades which are bridged at intervals by connecting members, the blades being edge-on to the counter-electrode. The elongate members are supported either on a backing sheet or plate which may be perforated or foraminous or in a surrounding frame. Connection to the support may be by welding or through the intermediary of insulating gaskets, or the members and support may be unitary. The anode may be of Ti, Zr, Nb, Ta or W or an alloy thereof, e.g. of Ti with Zr, Pt, Ir, Rh, Nb or Ta. The catalytic coating may be a Pt group metal and/or oxide or a boride, phosphide or silicide thereof or may be Rh, Rh 2 O 3 Ti 3 N 4 or magnetite. The coating may include e.g. Sn or Ti oxides. The cathode, which can be a perforated sheet or tube, may be mild steel. The diaphragm may be PTFE, PVdF or asbestos, being in the latter case directly deposited on the cathode. The cell is useful in alkali metal chloride electrolysis.
