Abstract
1479465 Alpha-methylstyrene block copolymers STAMICARBON BV 5 Sept 1974 [6 Sept 1973] 38855/74 Heading C3P A block copolymer of the formula AB(BA) n wherein each A is a polyalphamethylstyrene block, n is 1 to 3, and the or each B is an elastomeric conjugated diene polymer block is obtained by (a) polymerizing the alpha methyl styrene in the presence of a monofunctional anionic initiator, a polar activator not containing an active hydrogen atom and optionally a non-polar solvent, at 0‹ to 40‹ C. for not more than 120 minutes, at an initial monomer concentration of more than 100 g. monomer per litre of reaction medium and an activator/ initiator molar ratio of 0À1 to 35, (b) adding and polymerizing a small amount of the conjugated diene and/or styrene, (c) polymerizing the main conjugated diene charge and (d) coupling the living two-block product with a linking agent. Examples refer to the production of (alphamethyl styrene – b – butadiene) (butadiene – b – alphamethylstyrene) 1 to 3 block copolymers using sec.-butyllithium as initiator, tetrahydrofuran, diethyl ether, or bis-(2-ethoxyethyl)-ether as activator, in cyclohexane solvent or in bulk, followed by addition of the butadiene in two stages and coupling with amyl acetate, ethyl benzoate, glycoldibenzoate, dimethyladipate, diethyloxalate, trichlorosilane, dimethydichlorosilane or toluene diisocyanate.
