Abstract

1479721 Herbicidal pyridine compouhds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 June 1974 [24 May 1973 29 Jan 1974] 24826/73 and 04074/74 Heading C2C Novel pyridine compounds of Formula I where X 1 and X 2 each represent a halogen atom and R is H; a salt-forming cation; an aryl radical; an acyl radical; or a C 1 to C 6 alkyl radical substituted by OH, C 1 to C 6 alkoxy, an aryl group or a C 2 to C 6 alkenyl or alkynyl group are used in herbicidal compositions. Compounds of Formula I in which R is H may be prepared by halogenating 2-fluoro-4- hydroxypyridine which itself may be prepared either by alkaline hydrolysis of 2,4-difluoropyridine with an alkali metal hydroxide or by reacting 2,4-difluoropyridine with a metal derivative of an alcohol, e.g. allyl alcohol, and then hydrolysing the resulting ether of 2-fluoro- 4-hydroxypyridine. Compounds where R is H may also be prepared by the reaction scheme where M is an alkali metal, R1 is aryl, C 1 -C 6 alkyl substituted by OH, C 1 -C 6 alkoxy, aryl or C 2 -C 6 alkyl or alkenyl, and (O) is an oxidizing agent. The ether obtained in step (3) may be converted to the compound of formula in which R is H by aqueous acid hydrolysis. Compounds of Formula I where R is H may be connected to their salts by treatment with a base. Compounds of Formula I where R is acyl may be prepared from compounds of Formula I where R is H by treatment with the appropriate acyl chloride. Compounds of Formula I where R is aryl or substituted alkyl may be prepared either by the reaction scheme above by selecting the appropriate R1 or by the scheme where MOR is a metal derivative of an alcohol.
