1487399 Spatial filtering PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Oct 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 45227/74 Heading G2J The image of an object (which object comprises a plurality of individual identical objects arranged in a periodic array) is rendered substantially defect free and of increased depth of focus by selective spatial filtering of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern orders. The Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of a regular array of hexagonally arranged holes is shown by X’s in Fig. 4. A spatial filter allows only those diffraction images encircled to pass on to form the reconstituted image. This has three effects:-(a) the depth of field of the reconstituted image is increased; (b) the minor periodic defects are removed; (c) the number of “holes” in the image may be different from that in the object dependent on the “order” of the Fraunhofer images transmitted by the spatial filter.
