Abstract
1487468 Monitoring octane number GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 12 Aug 1975 [20 Aug 1974] 33567/75 Heading G1B [Also in Division B8] For monitoring the octane number of a gasoline stream a sample of the stream in lines 20, 22 is periodically charged into a reactor 12 containing a free-oxygen containing gas for measurement of a characteristic of the subsequent reaction, the gasoline in line 20, 22 being maintained at a pressure high enough to prevent vapourization of the gasoline, the sample being periodically displaced, in the embodiment shown by linear displacement of the sliding member 34 of slide valve 16, into a chamber 58 of large volume relative to the sample and containing a finely divided solid material such as glass wool or stainless steel showings or alternatively a permeable block of finely divided material adapted to hold the liquid gasoline in the chamber by capillary action, the chamber being at a reduced pressure so that the gasoline is vapourized in the chamber and passes into the reactor (which is vented to the atmosphere), the slide valve being returned to its original position to allow a flow of carrier gas through the chamber 58 into the reactor. The carrier gas may be air or nitrogen, when a separate line is needed for delivery of free oxygen-containing gas into the reactor. The reactor may be an insulated stainless steel or glass sphere having electrical heating elements and may be enclosed in an oven 10 maintained at 60 to 90C.
