Abstract
1487603 Spray carburetters; heating charge NIPPON SOKEN Inc 11 Dec 1974 [13 Dec 1973 27 Dec 1973 6 Feb 1974 11 Feb 1974 18 Feb 1974 18 June 1974 5 Aug 1974 2 Sept 1974] Headings F1B and F1H A carburetter for supplying respective mixtures to the pre-combustion and main chambers 1 and 2 of an I.C. engine comprises a fuel nozzle 73 or 70′ supplying the induction passage 31 upstream of main and auxiliary ducts 35 and 36 containing respective throttle valves 37 and 38 and so disposed relative to the fuel nozzle as to supply a mixture and a richer mixture respectively. The valves 37 and 38 are conjointly operable and with a deflecting vane 82 or the vane may be operated conjointly with the suction-operated air valve 32 linked to the fuel metering needle. The vane 82 may be adjusted in accordance with atmospheric pressure or temperature or engine cooling water temperature. The valve 32 co-operates with a contoured surface on the side wall of the passage 31 opposite to the nozzle 73 to prevent air flow between the valve and wall up to a predetermined valve opening angle. In a fixed choke carburetter, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), the upsteam end 36a of the passage 36 may be arranged downstream of and coaxial with a secondary Venturi (101), Fig. 8, to which the fuel nozzle (73 “) opens or to one side of the induction passage downstream of the throat of a Venturi (100), the fuel nozzle (73”) opening in the Venturi closer to this side of the induction passage. An idling and slow-running system 110′, Fig. 12, may open in the region of the valve 38 to the passage 36 and an electromagnetically operated valve 121 may close the fuel passage 111 ‘or open the air inlet passage 118’ to prevent fuel flow through this system when the engine ignition is switched-off or when the clutch of a vehicle transmission is operated and the vehicle is travelling above a predetermined speed. The mixture in the passage 36 upsteam of the valve 38 may be reformed by igniting part of the mixture by a spark-plus 141, Fig. 14 between metal or ceramic net or honeycomb flame arresters 143, 144 within a heat insulator 144. The mixtures from the ducts 35 and 36 are heated by exhaust gases in the intake manifolds 9 and 18 and the richer mixture also passes through a finned tube in a cooling water chamber 7a prior to flow through the open inlet valve 11 to the pre-combustion chamber 2.
