Abstract

1487623 Ignition systems ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 15 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 49445/74 Heading F1B An ignition system for an internal combustion engine comprises a plurality of spark plugs 1, 2 which are arranged to receive their ignition voltage from the secondary winding 7 of an ignition coil 6 and each of which is connected in series with a series spark gap 4, 8 located between two electrodes, at least one electrode 10 of the two electrodes of each series spark gap being displaceable by means of a magnetic force, the particular spark-plug which is to receive the ignition voltage being arranged to be selected by temporarily decreasing the distance between the electrodes of the series spark gap associated with that plug as shown in Fig. 1 one 10 of the electrodes of each series gap is in the form of a resilient tongue adapted to be displaceable towards the other electrode by the magnetic force. The electrodes 10 are arranged to be successively subjected to the influence of a permanent magnet 14 rotated by the engine. Alternatively each of the series spark gaps has an associated control coil 26, 27 (Fig. 3) for producing an electromagnetic force. Each of the series spark gaps is enclosed in a hollow body made from non-magnetic material and this hollow body is filled with gas. The control coils 26, 27 associated with the individual spark gaps 4, 8 are successively connectible to a current source 28, the energization of the control coils being synchronized with the triggering of an ignition operation. As shown, each control coil is associated with a controllable electronic switch 36 or 39. These switches are arranged to be changed over by the outputs of signal generators 49, 51 which are controllable one after the other by means of a signal trigger 52 rotatable by the engine. The electronically controllable switches 36 and 39 can be replaced by a mechanical switching device. The series gaps and their control coils can be located in or on the ignition coil or alternatively in the plug connectors. Specification 1487624 is referred to.
