Abstract

1487752 I C engine driving gear BRITISH LEYLAND UK Ltd 13 March 1975 [15 March 1974] 11591/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A fluid flywheel or fluid torque converter is mounted on the primary output shaft of a power unit and receives high-pressure oil from a forced feed lubrication system of the power unit, the oil supply to both the principal bearings of the unit and the flywheel or converter is through an arterial oilway formed in the length of the output shaft and the oil is returnable from the flywheel or converter to the lubrication system via a pressure relief valve concentrically housed within a hollow end of the output shaft. A reciprocating-piston inline I.C. engine has a directly driven lubricating oil pump mounted at one end of the crank-shaft and the other end of the crank-shaft carries a fluid flywheel or, as shown in Fig. 2, a torque converter. The stator 40 of the converter is fixed to the engine housing, impeller 41 is keyed to the crankshaft and turbine 42 is rotatably mounted on crank-shaft extension 2B and carries a driving gear 44. Oil from the pump passes through passageways 20 in the crank-shaft and part of the oil lubricates the main and big-end bearings; the remainder, as shown by arrows, flows through the converter. Excess pressure in the converter is relieved by a spring-loaded ball valve 46, which allows oil to flow through apertures 48 in a hollow bolt 45 and hence to the engine sump. Bolt 45 also secures the converter on the shaft.
