Abstract

1501276 Electrodialytic conversion of salts to weak acids IONICS Inc 17 Sept 1975 [29 Oct 1974] 38206/75 Heading C7B A cell for converting a water-soluble salt of a weak acid to the corresponding acid comprises a container divided into 4 individual chambers 5, 6a, 6b, 7, the cell having at the terminal ends a cathode chamber 7 and anode chamber 5 containing respective electrodes 10 and 9, first and second adjacent intermediate chambers 6a and 6b between 5 and 7, cation-permeable membranes 2a, 2b and 2c separating the chambers as shown, and means for separately introducing and removing fluids from each of said chambers from a hold-up tank 30, 31, 32, 33 associated with each of said chambers, and means for passing D.C. between the anode and cathode. In an example, the anode is Pb-Sb having an oxide coating, the cathode is stainless steel, the anolyte is H 2 SO 4 and the catholyte is NaOH. The salt is Na citrate; this is fed to both chambers 6a and 6b; migration of H+ from 5 converts the salt to the corresponding acid to a high degree in 6a and to a lesser degree in 6b; the process may be performed batchwise, in which case continuous circulation is performed through each chamber until the desired conversion has taken place in 6a; this chamber is then emptied and refilled with the contents of 6b: otherwise the process may be continuous in which case valves 40 (salt feed) and 43 (transfer 6a-6b) are left open and salt is fed in from 41 and product removed at 42. Other carboxylic acids which may be produced from their metallic salts are glycine, diglycine, triglycine, citric, tartanic, acetic, acrylic, maleic and/ or ascorbic.
