Abstract
1501441 Silencers BRUNSWICK CORP 23 Jan 1975 [1 Feb 1974] 3056/75 Heading F1B A device, for attenuating sound in a fluid when flowing therefrom, comprises a housing surrounding a conduit having an inlet and an outlet, the conduit having in series after the inlet, first means for attenuating L.F. sound entering the device, and second means for attenuating H.F. sound entering the device and consisting of a duct having a foraminous wall which has a pre-selected acoustical resistance to the passage therethrough of H.F. sound, the resistance being substantially the same value as the impedance of the flowing fluid in use of the device, the first means attenuating the L.F. sound to a level sufficiently low to enable the wall of the duct to effectively function at its pre-selected acoustical resistance. Conduit 10 is enclosed over part of its length by housing 11 which forms a low frequency (less than 500 Hz) resonator communicating with the conduit through ports 15. This section of the device reduces the level of L.F. sound to less than 120 db. The portion of the conduit 10 downstream of ports 15 has a foraminous wall and is enclosed by wall 21 to form tuned cavities the radial dimension a of which is one-quarter of the wavelength to which the cavity is tuned. The resistance to flow through the foraminous wall of the conduit is stated to be increased if L.F. sound at a level greater than 120 db is present in the gas stream and the reduction of L.F. sound levels to below this figure, by the L.F. resonator, is stated to enhance the efficiency of the second stage in reducing the level of H.F. sounds. The foraminous portion of the tube may comprise a perforated tube, metal fibre web, knitted fibre or wire, compacted fibre, foamed metals or non-metals, glass or plastics fibre, porous ceramics or combinations thereof. A preferred construction, Fig. 12, consists of a perforated tube 52 with a lining of metal, organic or ceramic fibres 54 which have a protective coating of an oxidation catalyst such as nickel, platinum, aluminium oxide or copper oxide. In a modified construction Fig. 4 (not shown) a middle frequency (500-1000 Hz) resonator is provided downstream of the H.F. attenuator. In a second modification, Fig. 6, the housing includes three L.F. resonators 41 connected to the tube by ports 37 and H.F. standing wave cavities 41. In a third modification, Fig. 8, two parallel tubes 27 are contained in housing 23 and have foraminous wall portions co-extensive with H.F. standing wave cavities 32. L.F. resonators 30 are provided at each end of the housing and there are central, middlefrequency resonators 31.
