1506112 Immobilized micro-organisms TANABE SEIYAKU CO Ltd 9 July 1976 [11 July 1975] 28642/76 Heading C6F [Also in Division C2] L-malic acid is prepared from fumaric acid using a fumarase-producing micro-organism immobilized by polymerizing at least one acryl or allyl monomer in an aqueous suspension containing the microorganism and the immobilized micro-organism is contacted with at least one bile acid or salt thereof. The monomer may be acrylic or methacrylic acid, acrylamide, hydroxy-alkyl (1-4C) methacrylate, N, N -alkylene-bis (acrylamide), bis (acrylamide methyl) ether, N, N’-diacryl-ethyleneurea, alkylene glycol dimethacylate, N,N’,N”-triacrylhexa hydrotriazine, diallyl maleate, N,N’-diallyltartaric acid diamide and triallyl cyanurate or copolymers thereof, and the bile acids may be mono-, di- or tri-hydroxy acids, taurocholic, glycocholic, taurodesoxy-cholic, glycodesoxycholic, 3- hydroxy-6-ketocholanic and 3-hydroxy-6-ketoallocholanic acids and their sodium, potassium and ‘magnesium salts. The micro-organisms mentioned are Brevibacterium ammoniagenes, Corynebacterium equi, Escherichia coli, Microbacterium flavum, Proteus vulgaris and Pinchia farinosa. The immobilized micro-organism may be in granular form after the polymerization, and then soaked in an aqueous solution of bile acids.
