Abstract

1506606 Lung venilators FORREST MORTON BIRD 13 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 33721/75 Heading A5T [Also in Division F2] A lung ventilator is provided with means for establishing an adjustable additional flow of gas to the patient after the major portion of the inspiratory phase has been completed. In the ventilator, gas is supplied from a source to the inlet 67, Fig. 17, of a servo controller 87 which is open during the inhalation phase to allow gas to pass to outlet 71 of the controller and thence to a patient adapter 307, Fig. 1, through a flow rate control valve 189, Fig. 17, and Venturi assembly 229; gas from outlet 71 also passes by a line 287 to a chamber 178 of a diaphragm-operated valve 51 to bias the valve open whereby gas from the source passes through the valve to an inspiratory power fitting 219 to bias an exhalation valve 308, Fig. 1, closed and also to the patient adapter, gas further being supplied to the exhalation valve and the adapter from the servo controller via lines 187, 194, 197, Fig. 17. The pressure in the patient’s lungs is transmitted through a line 262 to a chamber (102) Fig. 7, (not shown), of the controller to act on a diaphragm (94) of the valve thereof. When a predetermined pressure is reached in chamber (102) sufficient to overcome a magnetic force biassing the valve open, the valve closes. However, chamber 178 is still pressurised and the valve 51 remains open until said chamber has bled down sufficiently through lines 287, 238. Gas therefore still passes to the fitting 219 through valve 51 during this period of closing to keep the exhalation valve closed, the bleed-down gases passing through Venturi assembly 229, where they entrain atmospheric gases through a filter 245, and to the patient adapter. On closure of valve 51, the exhalation valve opens, the expiratory period lasting until the pressure in chamber (102) reaches a predetermined reduced pressure sufficient to overcome a magnetic force biassing valve 87 closed, whereafter the inspiratory phase again starts. The source gases pass through a nylon mesh filter 43 before reaching controller 48 and valve 51. A flow rate control valve 282 is provided to control the flow rate from the controller to the Venturi assembly and also to control the rate of bleeding down of chamber 178 after closure of the controller valve to the Venturi assembly. A pressure gauge 163 connected to line 262 indicates the pressure in the patient’s lungs. A nebuliser 304, Fig. 1, is connected to the patient adapter, gas from the Venturi assembly and fitting 219, Fig. 17, passing therethrough before reaching the adapter. An excess pressure relief valve 268 is provided in the Venturi assembly. The air exhaled through valve 308 Fig. 1, passes through a vapour trap 312 containing a flapper valve (337) Fig. 16, (not shown), which normally closes openings (336) in a plate (333). The flapper valve forces the patient to exhale against a positive pressure.
