Abstract

1512211 Cases for alkaline cells UNION CARBIDE CORP 27 March 1975 [1 April 1974 (2)] 12837/75 Heading H1B An alkaline cell comprises a plastics film envelope 115, 123 provided with openings 116, 124 which expose current collectors 118, 125 for making external electrical connections, and layers 120, 127 of a fatty polyamide adhesive sealant which is non wettable by the alkaline electrolyte sealing the current collectors to the plastics film. A pair of negative electrodes 112, 113 are connected by a tab 130 to the collector 118 and a pair of positive electrodes 110, 111 are connected by a tab 131 to the collector 125. A separator envelope 114 is formed by a non-woven organic fibre mat such as nylon fibre and is impregnated with KOH. The container 115 and the cover 123 are both made of polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride copolymers, polypropyelene or polyethylene and are coated with layers 120, 121 and 127, 128 of the adhesive sealant. External collectors 119, 126 are connected by welds 122, 129 to the internal collectors 118, 125, the collectors being made of nickel foil. The margins 132, 133 of the plastics film are joined by heat sealing to form a leak-proof seam 134. The electrodes consist of sintered metal plaques of nickel powder on a nickel screen, the plaques being impregnated with positive active material such as nickel hydroxide or negative active material such as cadmium oxide or hydroxide. The negative plates 112, 113 contain additional active material to prevent generation of hydrogen on overcharge whilst the positive plates contain some negative active material to delay hydrogen generation on overdischarge of the cell. The cells may be stacked to form a battery and may be primary or secondary cells using manganese dioxide-zinc, silver oxide-zinc, nickel-cadmium, nickel-zinc or mercuric oxide-zinc systems.
