Abstract
1516308 Disc brakes; transmitting mechanisms R H BRAUNE 17 Sept 1975 [17 Sept 1974] 40382/74 Heading F2E [Also in Division B7] A disc brake comprises a pair of brake pads 4, 5 carried on opposite limbs of a yoke 21 which straddles a pair of relatively rotatable discs 17, 18 the pads 4, 5 being applied in use to respective outer sides of the discs 17, 18 with opposing axial thrusts. The embodiment of Fig. 2 has pad 4 fixed to one limb and pad 5, which is spring-returned, carried on guides (8) for transverse movement with respect to the other limb. The pad 5 is closed by a bell-crank 9 actuated by a cable 12 and pivoted on a back plate 14 which may be rigid with yoke 2. The yoke 21 may be stabilized in the normal disengaged position of Fig. 1 by an adjustable spring or springs but when traction is applied on cable 12 the assembly of parts 21, 14 move bodily to the right about a pivot axis 22 to engage pad 4, which allows crank 9 to rotate clockwise to close pad 5, whereafter the mutually opposite thrusts of the pads 4, 5 are balanced by the effect of the reaction forces tending to pivot the assembly about axis 22. The pair of discs 17, 18 of Fig. 2 are the driven discs of an infinitely variable speed differential gear connected to respective ones of a pair of road wheels. Fig. 3 illustrates a symmetrical system to provide selective as well as balanced braking of the differential gear of Fig. 2. The yoke 24 is rigidly fixed to a frame by bolts in holes 25 and two spring returned pads 5a, are controlled by respective bell-cranks 9. Cables 28, 29, 30 are anchored to a beam 27, and when central cable 30 is actuated, a crosshead 26 is lifted to contact abutments 31, 32 on cables 28, 29 to thereby actuate the bell-cranks 9. This simultaneously retards both wheels but for selective braking for steering purposes operation of either cable 28, 29 actuates only one pad 5a. Fig. 4 (not shown) illustrates a conventional hydraulic slave cylinder which can replace bellcrank 9. The Specification also envisages the actuating device to be a cam or lever actuated by a cable or rod.
