Abstract
1516695 Switching NORTH ELECTRIC CO 3 June 1975 [4 June 1974] 23964/75 Heading H3T [Also in Division H2] In the control of switching transistor 36 {e.g. in a power inverter}, regenerative current feedback between the emitter-base and emitter-collector circuits is provided by means of windings 28, 30, the number of turns in base drive winding 28 exceeding that in feedback winding 30, a control circuit being coupled to the emitter-base circuit via windings 18, 28. The regeneration decreases switching times of transistor 36. Control waveform 40 controls the switching of control transistor 10, the charging current, from source 9, of capacitor 16 when transistor 10 turns off triggering the switching-on of transistor 36, whose switch-off is triggered when capacitor 16 discharges through transistor 10 when saturated. The charging path of the capacitor may simply comprise a resistor (12), Fig. I (not shown) in the control transistor collector circuit, or circuit 50 is provided, transistor 56 providing a path for the charging current wherever transistor 10 is cut off, and itself being cut off during capacitor discharge. The numbers of turns in windings 18, 28, 30 respectively are in decreasing magnitude, base current for transistor 36, when in the on state being mainly provided by the regeneration. Diode 14 enables turn-off of transistor 36 to take place even in the absence of capacitor charge due to the low impedance in the circuit 18, 14, 10. Damping; of ringing which would be caused by the base-emitter capacitance of transistor 36 co-operating with winding 28; is provided by resistor 42, with the possible addition of network 70 also protecting the base-emitter from excess reverse voltage, resistor 72 ensuring that a sudden cut-off of current diverted through network 70 does not occur with decreasing emitter-base voltage. Diode 62 protects the emitter-base circuit of transistor 56 from excess reverse voltage. Two or more power circuits may be simultaneously switched using one control circuit. The duty cycle may be in the range, low, up to in excess of 50%. The transformer may have a ferrite core.
