Abstract

1517173 Indicating elapsed time in sporting events R A OSWALD 20 June 1975 [25 June 1974] 26388/75 Heading A6D [Also in Division H4] A system for indicating the elapsed time for each of a plurality of contestants such as horses from a starting point to a succession of stations along a race course or track comprises a plurality of transmitting means (Fig. 5) each suitable for being carried by a contestant and arranged to emit a radio signal at a discrete radio frequency for each contestant, receiving means located at each station and adapted to receive signals from each of said transmitting means. When they are within a predetermined area of said station, a plurality of detector means connected to the receiving means and each adapted to detect signals of a selected radio frequency corresponding to the discrete frequency for a particular contestant, signal generating means associated with each detector means arranged to generate an output signal in response to the detection by a rsepective detector means of a signal of the corresponding discrete frequency, a plurality of timing counters serially connected to each detector means and each corresponding to a particular station on the race course or track, starting means operable to connect a clock with said timing counters and to start said timing counters counting time according to signals from the clock, stopping means operable by the output signals, from the signal generating means associated with the detector means, to cause individual counters to stop and to indicate elapsed time when signals are received at the corresponding station on the track or course. The starting means is conventionally arranged to start the counters counting at the beginning of a race so that when each counter is stopped it indicates the time between the start of the race and the time at which it is stopped. The transmitting means may comprise a card 18 (Fig. 5) battery 19, electrical components 21 and an electrically conductive spiral loop 22 printed on the card and acting as an aerial. The card may be carried in a pocket 23 (Fig. 4) on a horses head for example. The receiving means may comprise loops 54A, B, C, D (Figs. 2 and 4) comprising co-axial cables situated beneath the race track or course and connected to a coaxial cable 62. The elapsed time at each station may be displayed at a console, (as shown in Fig. 1) where in the name of each contestant is displayed in windows 115, 116, 117 and the lapsed time for each contestant at each station is indicated by registers 100- 1, 100-2, respective stations being indicated in windows 121, 122, 123. Details of electronic circuitry comprising the detector means and stopping and starting means are disclosed in the specification together with details of the operation of other electronic components of the system. The circuitry may include means to assess and indicate the relative positions of contestants in a race which information may be displayed on the console at windows 150.
