Abstract
1517667 Expanding wheel gear VAN DOORNES TRANSMISSIE BV 3 Nov 1976 [6 Nov 1975] 45732/76 Heading F2D In a V-belt pulley in which the axial spacing of the coned flanges 1, 4 is varied by supplying at 10 hydraulic pressure to a space 8 of a cylinder 7 integral with the axially movable flange 4, and centrifugal pressure on the liquid is compensated by centrifugal pressure of liquid fed from the working space 8 to a space 12 on the opposite side of a piston 9 fixed to the shaft 2 of the other flange 1, the liquid is supplied to the compensating space 17 from 8 through a passage which can be completely or partly closed in response to spacing between the flanges, speed, or differential pressure. In Fig. 1 a rod 16, moving axially with the cylinder 7 and sliding through a bore in the piston 9, has a liquid supply passage 17 which feeds the compensating space 12 until the flanges 1, 4 approach sufficiently for the piston 9 gradually or suddenly to cover the end of the passage 17 and thereby cut off any further flow. Since the compensating space 12 is open to atmosphere at a gap 14, where the liquid could escape, the cutoff of flow under this large diameter and hence low speed condition reduces the flow requirement and hence the capacity required of the supply pump. In Fig. 2, not shown, the piston 9 similarly controls a groove (18) in the cylinder wall. In Fig. 3, not shown, the boss 15 of the piston 9 carries a radially inwardly spring-loaded ball valve (19) which is unseated by centrifugal force to supply liquid to the compensating space at higher speeds. In Fig. 4, not shown, there is a rod 16 similar to that of Fig. 1, but its passage contains a spring-loaded valve opened by differential pressure between the working and compensating spaces, the delivery opening being also subject to being covered by the piston 9 as in Fig. 1.
