Abstract

1521966 Electrolytic etching of steel; Ni plating; enamelling OXY METAL INDUSTRIES CORP 11 Sept 1975 [12 Sept 1974] 39827/74 Heading C7B A steel workpiece is made the anode and is immersed in a composition comprising (A) an organic compound containing an alcoholic hydroxyl group and aliphatic unsaturation (B) an acid to etch the steel, and optionally (C) one or more surface active perfluorocarbon sulphonic acids or their salts or one or more fluoro carbon sulphonic or sulphuric acid compounds of Formula H(CF 2 CF 2 ) x (CH 2 ) y ZM where x # 2, y = 1-3, M is a cation and Z is -SO 3 – or -OSO 3 -, or 4-dodecyl-3,3′-disulpho-1,1′-diphenyl ether, and a D.C. current is passed, using insoluble cathodes, e.g. of Pb or PbSn, at a CD of 1-100 A/ft2 to remove 0À1-10 g/ft2 of metal from the workpiece. Compound (B) may be H 2 SO 4 , HCl, HNO 3 , or H 3 PO 4 in amount 20-600 g/l. Compounds (A) mentioned, and preferred amounts, are: allyl alcohol 0À4 to 4 g/l, but-2-ene-1-4-diol 0À15 to 2 g/l, propargyl alcohol 0À05 to 1 g/l, and but-2-yne-1,4- diol 0À02 to 1 g/l. The bath may also contain R(X) SO where X=R’ or OM or OH, where R=R’=an organic radical, e.g. Na benzene sulphinate or dimethyl sulphoxide, e.g. in amount 0À5-10 g/l. In an enamelling process, steel is alkali cleaned, rinsed, alkali-cleaned electrolytically, rinsed, etched electrolytically as above, rinsed, desmolted electrolytically in alkali, rinsed and neutralized in H 2 SO 4 , electrolytically Ni-plated from a bath of 80 g/l NiSO 4 À7H 2 O, 10 g/l NH 4 Cl, 20 g/l MgSO 4 . 7H 2 O and 5 g/l H 3 BO 3 at pH 5À3 using Ni anodes at 2 A/ft2 for 2 minutes, immersed in NaNO 2 solution, and then enamelled; an alternative Ni bath contains 70 g/l NiSO 4 .6À5H 2 O, 15 g/l NaCl, 12 g/l MgSO 4 , 7 g/l H 3 BO 3 ; a CD of 2 A/ft2at 20‹C for 2 minutes at pH 5À3-5À7 is used.
