Abstract

1523434 Air separation PETROCARBON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 8 Oct 1975 37462/74 Heading F4P In an air separation process for obtaining gaseous nitrogen, in which the cold is produced by work expansion of at least part of at least one of the process streams, the work produced by the expansion is used to increase the pressure of the product nitrogen gas. As shown, air is compressed at 10, impurities are removed in adsorbers 11, and the air is cooled and partly liquefied in heat exchangers 12, 13 before introduction to column 15. Liquefied “bottoms” is expanded at nozzle 18 vaporized in heat exchanger 14 and further warmed in heat exchanger 13 then work expanded in a turbine 16. Gaseous nitrogen product is withdrawn at the top 35 of column 15, a portion is liquefied in heat exchanger 14 and refluxed at 38, whilst the remainder is passed through heat exchanger 12 before being compressed by blower 17 driven by turbine 16. Some liquefied nitrogen product may be withdrawn at 39.
