Abstract

1525021 Adding steam to IC engine charges EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 16 Jan 1976 [24 Jan 1975] 3173/75 Heading F1B In I.C. engine running on a mixture which would cause knock to occur at selected periods, steam is added to the mixture only during these selected periods, that is at full-load constant speed operation, full-throttle acceleration or at part-throttle acceleration with the throttle at least 90% open. Water is fed by an electric motor driven pump 21, 22 from a reservoir 20 into a boiler 15 around an exhaust pipe 16 and passes through a lagged pipe 17 to a carburetter 12. The motor is controlled only to operate in the above mentioned periods by controller units 29, 30, 32. Engine load is indirectly measured by a vacuum capsule (not shown) mounted in the engine intake pipe downstream of the throttle and the measured signal sent to unit 29; throttle position is reported to unit 30; and water temperature sensed by thermostat 31 is reported to unit 32 to inhibit operation of the pump when the water is frozen.
