Abstract

1525416 Protecting DC-DC converters MULLARD Ltd 21 April 1976 16106/76 Heading H2F In a DC-DC converter comprising a switching transistor 1a arranged to switch current from a DC source 31 into an inductance, such as the primary 5a of a transformer 6, coupled via rectifier 10a to output terminals 8, 9, overcurrent protection is provided by monitoring the current of transistor 1a and feeding the resulting signal to a circuit 22a arranged to prevent excessive current in transistor 1a except during the start of each conductive period of the transistor 1a. As described, a control circuit 2 drives the main transistors 1a, 1b in push-pull via driver transistors 3a, 3b. The transistors 1a 1b are protected against over-current due to saturation of transformer 6 or smoothing inductor 11 by means of respective current transformers 17a, 17b the outputs of which are rectified at 19a, differentiated at 21a and, during over-current conditions, turn on transistor 22a which inhibits the control circuit 2. A clamping transistor 29a is turned on by means of a monostable multivibrator (not shown) in control circuit 2 at the beginning of each current pulse so as to prevent spurious operation of the protection circuit by the capacitance discharge surge. Diodes 25a, 26a clamp any negativegoing signals. Items 20a-29a may be made common to both protection circuits for the two transistors 1a, 1b. A conventional current limit circuit and a current balance circuit may be incorporated. A volatage regulator 15 may be included to control the mark/space ratio..
