Abstract

1527976 Optic fibre power dividers CORNING GLASS WORKS 1 Aug 1977 [2 Aug 1976] 32177/77 Heading G2J An optical fibre power divider for step index fibres, comprising at least two optical fibres having their end portions fused together in side by side relationship, the cross-sectional area of said end portions decreasing toward the end-face, and at least one other fibre having its end portion disposed parallel to the end portions of the said at least two fibres, the end-face of the at least one other fibre being fused to the end-face of the said at least two fibres. As shown, Fig. 4 (not shown), Figs. 2 and 5 the junction may be made by placing fibres 20-22 side by side and fusing the claddings at 32. The other fibre 34 is abutted to the end-face 24-26 and fused thereto. Upon drawing the junction so formed a device of the kind shown in Fig. 5 is obtained. The invention may be used to join a single fibre to a common end-face formed between three fibre ends, Fig. 6 (not shown); or to join a common endface of two fibres to another common end-face of three fibres, Fig. 7 (not shown).
