Abstract
1528219 Electronic timepieces DAINI SEIKOSHA KK 11 Oct 1976 [13 Oct 1975 19 Dec 1975 (2)] 42182/76 Heading G3T [Also in Division G5] In an electronic timepiece with a digital LED display, the display is continuously energized. However, to minimize power consumption only one display digit is in an activated state at a time; in addition the energization is controlled in dependence upon the number of segments of a 7-segment display device, which require to be energized to produce a given numeral. The energization is controlled by selectively applying drive pulses of appropriate width, duty ratio or waveform to give substantially the same brightness for all numerals. Persistence of vision gives the effect of continuous illumination. In Fig. 4, an electronic scanning switch circuit 44 couples the BCD coded outputs of secs, mins, hours counter circuits 33 to a de-coder/driver 66, in synchronism with pulse signals corresponding to selected numerals from a numeral selecting signal generating circuit 55 (e.g. a ring counter). The de-coder 66 has seven outputs each corresponding to a respective segment of a 7-segment numeric display 88. The outputs of the numeral selecting circuit 55 are also applied to the display via a signal changing circuit 77 which determines the drive pulse width or duty-cycle or waveform (e.g. a plurality of higher f pulses may be supplied instead of a single lower f pulse having a duration equal to the aggregate period of the plurality of pulses).
