Description

(54) CASEMENT STAY
(71) We, R. CARTWRIGHT & CO.
LIMiTED, a British Company, of Fleet
Works, Straight Road, Short Heath, Willenhall, in the County of West Midlands, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to casement stays.
In particular, the invention is concerned with a casement stay of the kind, hereinafter referred to as the kind specified, comprising a mounting part, a joint part mounted on the mounting part for turning relative thereto about a first axis, and a stay arm mounted on the joint part for turning relative thereto about a second axis perpendicular to the first axis, the stay arm being formed to co-operate with a separate engagement part whereby, in use, with the mounting part and the engagement part mounted respectively on the casement and the surrounding frame of a window, or vice versa, the stay is operable to secure the casement in any desired one of a number of positions in which it is open to different extents.
Various forms of casement stay are known.
A common disadvantage of such stays is that they comprise a relatively large number of components and hence involve several assembly operations, so that they are comparatively expensive. In particular, washers are often provided between opposed faces of the mounting part and the joint part to provide bearing means for the latter on turning thereof relative to the mounting part. A further disadvantage is that because the stays are grade predominantly of metal, any manufacturing inaccuracies could cause stiffness in the movement of the stay arm, so that in production the manufacturing tolerances have to be checked frequently and in use the stay may require to be lubricated relatively inexpensive to produce.
from time to time.
The broad object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of casement stay which is of a simple construction and
A subsidiary aim of the invention is to provide a casement stay which has a smooth and easy movement of the stay arm without the need for lubrication.
According to the invention there is provided a casement stay of the kind specified wherein the joint part comprises two initially separate elements which are each formed to provide a bearing face and have formations interengageable on assembly of the stay to secure said elements together and to connect them to the mounting part with their respective bearing faces in contact with opposite side faces of the mounting part thereby to provide bearing means for the joint part on turning thereof relative to the mounting part about said first axis.
Thus, it is the elements of the joint part themselves which provide the bearing means for the joint part, and additional elements such as washers do not have to be provided for this purpose which simplifies, and reduces the cost of assembly of the stay.
Preferably, the said elements of the joint part are made of a suitable plastics material which enables their said faces to be formed as smooth anti-friction bearing faces. The mounting part is preferably of metal. By making the elements of an appropriate plastics material, for example Nylon, it is ensured that the stay arm maintains its smooth and easy movement without the need for lubrication.
Preferably the mounting part is formed with an aperture coincident with the said first axis and one of the elemeits of the joint part comprises a first portion providing its said bearing face and a second, smaller portion projecting from said first portion and extending into the aperture, the other element, disposed at the side of the mounting part
remote from the said first portion, being
secured to the said second portion.
Preferably, in this event, the said other element of the joint part has an aperture or
recess into which the said second portion of
the said one element extends.
To locate the joint part for turning about the first axis relative to the mounting part, the said other element preferably comprises
a first portion providing its said bearing face and a second, smaller portion of cylindrical form which projects from said first portion and is disposed in the aperture in the mountinging part which is of complementary circular form so that the cylindrical, second portion is turnable therein.
The inter-engageable formations are conveniently provided between the said second portion of the first element of the joint part
and the wall of the second element defining the aperture or recess therein. Preferably the said formations comprise a rib or ribs on one of the elements and a groove or grooves in the other element arranged to be engaged by the rib(s). By making the elements of the joint parts of a resilient plastics material, the rib(s) can be engaged with the groove(s) with a snap-in fit.
In a specific embodiment, the second portion of the said one element is of rectangular cross section and is received in a said aperture of complementary rectangular cross section in the said other element. Two said grooves are formed in two opposite side faces of the rectangular portion of the said one element for engagement by two said ribs provided at two opposite sides of the rectangular aperture in the said other element.
The bearing face of each element of the joint part is, of course, provided by the face of the first portion thereof surrounding the projecting second portion thereof. The first portion of each element is preferably discshaped.
The mounting part may comprise a generally disc-shaped part having the said aperture therein and secured to a fixing plate or bracket.
Following the preferred practice with casement stays of the kind specified, the said first and second axes may intersect. In this event, the second portion of the said one element of the joint part preferably extends through an aperture in the said other element to provide a portion projecting from the latter to which the stay arm is pivotally connected, for example by a pivot pin extending through said projecting portion and intersecting the axis of turning of the joint part.
The invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an exploded perspective view of one form of casement stay embodying the invention; FIGURE 2 is a cross section through the assembled stay; FIGURE 3 is a side view of the stay, and
FIGURE 4 is a plan view of the stay.
The casement stay illustrated in the drawings basically comprises a mounting part 10 to be fitted to the casement of a window, a joint part 11 turnable relative to the mounting part about a first axis which is usually vertical when the stay is in use, and a stay arm 12 turnable relative to the joint part 11 about a second axis which is at right angles to and intersects the first axis and which, in use, is usually horizontal. The stay arm is formed to co-operate with a separate engagement part (not shown) to be mounted on thefixed frame of the window, for example being formed with a longitudinal series of spaced, downwardly facing recesses for engagement by an upstanding pin carried by the engagement part.
The mounting part 10 is of aluminium and comprises a generally dise-shaped part 13 having a central circular aperture 14 and secured to a plate 15 which is provided with holes enabling the mounting part to be fitted by screws to the casement.
The joint part 11 comprises two elements 16 and 17 of a suitable resilient plastics material, for example Nylon. The first element 16 comprises a disc-shaped, first portion 18 and a smaller, second portion 19 of rectangular cross-section projecting from the portion 18, the face of the portion 18 surrounding the portion 19 constituting a gear- ing face of the element 16. The rectangular section portion 19 has two grooves 20 formed in opposite sides thereof. The second element 17 comprises a disc-shaped, first portion 21 and a smaller cylindrical, second portion 22 projecting from one side thereof and formed to be a turning fit in the aperture 14 in the mounting part. The element 17 has a central rectangular aperture 23 to receive the rectangular section portion 19 of the element 16 with a close fit, and two ribs 24 are provided in this aperture at opposite sides thereof for engagement in the grooves 20 in the element 16. The face of the portion 21 surrounding the projecting cylindrical portion 22 constitutes a bearing face of the element 17.
The stay arm 12 is of aluminium and is of channel shape in section, being shaped as shown in Figures 3 and 4. Its inner end is formed with aligned apertures 25 to receive a pivot pin 26 for securing the arm to an extension 27 of the rectangular section portion 19 of the first element 16 of the joint part, the end of the extension 27 being rounded as shown in Figure 1.
To assemble the casement stay, the second element 17 of the joint part is first fitted to the mounting part 10 by engagement of its cylindrical portion 22 in the aperture 14 of the part 13. The rectangular section portion 19 of the first element 16 is then pushed into the rectangular aperture 23 of the element 17 until the ribs 24 engage in the grooves 20 with a snapin fit, whereby the two elements 16 and 17 of the joint part are secured together and connected to the mounting part for turning relative thereto about said first axis.
When the joint part has been assembled, the bearing faces of the elements 16 and 17 are in contact with the opposite side faces of the part 13 of the mounting part 10 and provide bearing means for the joint part on turning thereof relative to the mounting part about said first axis.
Finally, the stay arm 12 is connected to the joint part for turning relative thereto about said second axis, by means of the pivot pin 26 which is in the form of a rivet.
It will be seen that the invention provides a casement stay which has only four parts requiring only three operations for assembly, so that the stay can be assembled quickly and easily.
