Description
(54) ROAD AND PAVEMENT SURFACING PLANT
(71) I, ERIC BARROW, a British subject of Byways, Kay Lane, Broomedge, Lymm,
Cheshire, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The invention concerns road or pavement surfacing plant.
According to the present invention there is proposed a road or pavement surfacing plant comprising a carriage, tank means mounted on such carriage to contain a supply of binder material in liquid form, a spray bar in fluid-flow connection with the said tank means adapted to receive material from such means and to return material thereto, pump means associated with the tank means and adapted to pump liquid material from such tank means to the spray bar, a plurality of spray nozzles in fluid-flow connection with the spray bar and arranged in spaced disposition longitudinally of such bar to receive material therefrom, valve means between the spray bar and nozzles and adapted selectively to control the passage of material therebetween, a hopper for surfacing material, the hopper having an outlet slot thereon in longitudinal register with the nozzles and the outlet slot being located rearwardly of the nozzles in the direction of intended plant movement, a distributor plate to receive surfacing material from the hopper and a jogger means having a part adjacent said distributor plate and in spaced parallel disposition relative thereto, surfacing material from the hopper passing between the distributor plate and jogger means.
In a preferred arrangement the carriage comprises a wheeled vehicle, and the spray bar is disposed transversely of such vehicle.
According to a further preferred feature, the spray nozzles are grouped transversely of the vehicle and the individual valve means for the nozzles of each respective groups are collectively actuable.
According to a still further preferred feature, a plurality of baffles is provided in register with the said outlet slot and in end-to-end disposition in the longitudinal direction thereof, the said baffles being adapted individually to be displaced relative to the slot selectively to allow of the passage of surfacing material through the related sections of the slot.
According to a still further preferred feature, the vehicle includes hydraulic wheel motors whereby the same is propelled.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment thereof, and in which: – Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a road surfacing plant constructed in accordance with the invention as applied to a wheeled, powered carriage;
Fig. 2 is a scrap section, drawn to a larger scale, of a part of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, and illustrates the means whereby the rate of delivery of surfacing material from the supply thereof is varied;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view, drawn to a larger scale, of the jogger bar and displacement means therefor whereby feed of surfacing material is controlled;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic perspective view, drawn to a larger scale, of a part of the delivery means for the binder material; and
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line V-V of
Fig. 4 and illustrates, diagrammatically, the valve means for controlling the feed of binder material to the spray nozzles.
Referring now to the drawings, a road surfacing plant comprises a wheeled carriage 11, a tank means 12 mounted on the said carriage to receive a quantity of binder material, a spray bar 13 in fluid-flow connection with the said tank means 12 to receive liquid binder material therefrom and to return such material thereto, a pump means, not shown, operable on the binder material in the said tank means 12 and adapted to deliver such material to the spray bar 13 under pressure, and a plurality of spray nozzles 14 on the spray bar 13 with a valve means 15 for each such nozzle, the said valve means being adjustable between open and closed positions selectively to place the spray nozzles 14 in fluid-flow connection with the spray bar 13 to receive binder material therefrom.The plant further includes a hopper 16 to receive a supply of surfacing material, such as granite chippings, a plurality of adjustable outlet apertures 17 in the hopper, an in clined distributor plate 18 disposed beneath the said outlet apertures 17, and a jogger means 19 having a jogger bar 20 overlying the distributor plate 18 in closely spaced parallel disposition relative thereto, the jogger means 19 including means 21 adapted to effect cyclical oscillations of the said jogger bar 20 in the longitudinal direction thereof.
The wheeled chassis 11 comprises a rigid framework lla having a single, steerable front wheel 1 lb and two individually driven rear wheels llc, the said rear wheels 1 1c having respective hydraulic hub motors (not shown) of conventional form whereby the chassis is propelled. A heater (not shown) is provided within the tank means 12, whilst a relief valve (likewise not shown), is provided on the pump for a purpose hereafter to be made apparent.
The spray bar 13, which spray bar is best seen in Figs. 4 and 5, is connected with the tank means 12 via feed and return pipes (feed pipe 22 only being shown), there being a cut-off valve in the return pipe for a purpose hereafter to be made apparent, and such bar extends transversely of the total structure at the underside of the hopper 16, the spray nozzles 14 carried by the spray bar 13 being disposed beneath the inclined distributor plate 18 and being so directed as to deliver binder materials to that part of the surface under treatment which lies beneath such plate. The spray bar 13 is of hollow, box-like form, and the feed pipe 22 and the return pipe connect therewith at opposite ends thereof.The spray nozzles 14 are provided at intervals longitudinally of the spray bar 13, and each is provided with a respective valve means 15 whereby the flow thereto of liauid binder material under pressure is controlled.
The arrangement of the valve means 15 is shown diagrammatically in Fig. 5 and such means comprises a tube 15a mounted transversely of the spray bar 13 and a Distonlike member 15b slidable axially thereof, there being inlet ports 15e in the tube 15a thereby to Dlace such tube in fluid flow connection with the interior of the snrav bar 13 and the Piston-like member 15b being adjustable between a position wherein the ports 15c are covered, and hence passage of hinder material into the tube is Drecluded. and a position wherein the ports 15c are uncovered, thus to allow fluid flow therethrousth into the tube 13 and thence to the spray nozzle 14 connected therewith.
Actuation of the valve means 15 is effected via levers 24 mechanically connected with an apertured bar 25 secured to the pistonlike members 15b, the levers 24 being carried by a rod 26 rotatably mounted in brackets 27 attached to and extending outwardly from the spray bar 13, the rod 26 extending through the side-wall of the hopper 16 and carrying a lug 28 thereon outwardly of such side wall to which a pivoted handle 29 is connected via a link member 30. Movement of handle 29 in an appropriate sense will pivot the lug 28 about the axis of rod 26, and will thus rotate such rod about its own axis. The rotational motion of the rod 26 will adjust the angularity of the levers 24, and will shift the apertured bar 25 towards or away from the spray bar 13 thereby to adjust the valve means 15.
In order to provide for an adjustment of the operating width of the plant, the valve means and related spray nozzles are arranged in groups transversely of the vehicle, each group being related to a specific band or operating width of the plant and the bands or operating widths collectively defining the maximum operating width of the plant. Thus, in the embodiment under consideration, ten valve means and associated spray nozzles are provided, such valve means and nozzles being arranged in successive groups of four, three and three widthwise of the plant.In order to provide for the selective operation of the individual groups, bar 26 is in the form of a coaxial structure of three elements, one such element extending throughout substantially the full length of the spray bar and having the lug 28, the handle 29 and the link member 30 connected therewith, the said element having those levers 24 mounted thereon which serve to operate the innermost group of three valve means, the apertured bar 25 being common only to such valve means. A second element, not shown, arranged coaxially with and radially outwardly of element 26 carries levers corresponding to levers 24 which are mechanically connected with an apertured bar corresponding to bar 26 which is common to the adjacent group of valve means. At its outer end the second element carries a lug which is pivotally connected with a link member 30′ (Fig. 1) and with a handle 29′.
As with handle 29, adjustment of handle 29′ in an appropriate sense will pivot the related lug and hence effect rotation of the said second element to adjust the valve means of the second group thereof via the levers and apertured bar associated therewith. A third element, not shown, is provided radiallv outwardly of the second such element, and in a manner analogous thereto is connected with a handle 29″ through a linkage 30″ and with the related group of valve means via levers and an apertured plate. It will be apparent that by suitable adjustment of the handles 29, 29′, 29″, so the operating width of the plant, as regards the spraying of binder material, can be varied to suit specific requirements.
The hopper 16 has a generally vertical rear wall 31, and a downwardly and rearwardly inclined bottom 32, the distributor plate 18 being a continuation of such bottom 32, and a forwardly and downwardly inclined baffle plate 33 is provided adjacent the bottom of the rear wall and within the hopper, the baffle plate 33 terminating short of the opposed hopper bottom 32 to leave a feed slot 34, being the outlet aperture 17 aforesaid, therebetween. Three side-byside closure plates 35 are slidably mounted at the underside of the inclined baffle plate 33, such closure plates 35 collectively covering the full width of the hopper, and each being in register, in the longitudinal direction of the plant, with a respective group of the valve means 15.The closure plates 35 are slidable in guide means 36 between open and closed positions and are each adjustable by a respective linkage comprising a connector rod 37 attached to a lug 38 on the underside of the closure plate and a cranked handle 39 pivotally mounted on the outer face of the rear wall 31, there being an aperture 40 in such wall to allow passage therethrough of the connector rod 37.
Pivotal motion of a handle 39 in an appropriate sense will allow of a displacement of the related closure plate 35 to or from a position wherein the corresponding part of the feed slot 34 is closed, according to requirements, and thus the effective width of the feed slot 34 can be varied in correspondence with the adjustment of the spray nozzles 14.
The jogger means 19 comprises the jogger bar 20 aforesaid arranged against the outer face of the rear wall 31 and at the lower edge thereof, such edge being in spaced disposition relative to the opposed surface of the distributor plate 18, such bar 20 consisting of rigid element of L-shaped cross-section and being held in position relative to the hopper by spaced rollers 41 bearing on the vertical web of the bar, the rollers 41 being mounted on downwardly extending stub shafts 42 on a bar 43 extending transversely of the hopper in adjacent parallel disposition relative to the jogger bar 20 and pivotally supported in lugs 44 arranged one at each side of the hopper.
A cranked handle 45 is secured to the bar 43 and serves for the angular adjustment thereof about its axis to move the rollers 41 outwardly relative to hopper, thus to allow corresponding transverse movement of the jogger bar to vary the cross-sectional dimensions of the surfacing material feed slot 34. A screw means, not shown, is provided for effecting the angular adjustment of the handle. A spring, not shown, is provided between the jogger bar 20 and hopper 16 against the restraint of which such bar 20 is shifted longitudinally, as will hereafter become apparent.
The means 21 for effecting cyclical oscillation of the jogger bar 20 comprises a rod 46 pivotally mounted on the hopper 16 for motion about a generally vertical axis, the rearward end of such rod 46 being secured to the jogger bar 20 and the forward end thereof carrying a cam follower 47 in coX operative engagement with an edge cam 48 carried by the rear wheel 1 lc and coaxial therewith. The spring serves to hold the cam follower 47 in engagement with the edge cam 48, and the form of the cam is such as to cause the jogger bar 20 to execute a cyclical movement in the longitudinal direction thereof.
A manual adjustment is provided for the cut-off valve in order to maintain constant the pressure of the binder material in the spray bar for part sectional use only of the plant, the said adjustment being effected by means of a linkage arrangement 49 operatively connected with the said valve.
The operation of the plant will be selfevident from the foregoing description, once the binder material is fluid and at a temperature and viscosity appropriate for use. However, during initial heating, and before the binder material is in a condition appropriate for use it is necessary that such material be circulated through the feed pipe, the spray bar and the return pipe, the various valve means being maintained in a closed condition. Upon the attainment of the working temperature the cut-off valve operates on the return pipe to limit the flow through the feed pipe, a relief valve on the pump operating to vent the same rather than to apply further fluid under pressure to the spray bar.
WHAT I CLAIM IS:- 1. A road or pavement surfacing plant comprising a carriage, tank means mounted on such carriage to contain a supply of binder material in liquid form, a spray bar in fluid-flow connection with the said tank means adapted to receive material from such means and to return material thereto, pump means associated with the tank means and adapted to pump liquid material from such tank means to the spray bar, a plurality of spray nozzles in fluid-flow connection with the spray bar and arranged in spaced disposition longitudinally of such bar to receive material therefrom, valve means between the spray bar and nozzles and adapted selectively to control the passage
