Description

(54) A PEDAL ASSEMBLY FOR USE IN A MOTOR VEHICLE

Republic, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be ted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following state- ment:- This invention relates to a pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor. It is well known that a
Diesel engine is unstable at idling speed and a speed governor is invariably fitted to engines to be used in vehicles of all kinds.
It is normally mounted on the end of the fuel injection pump. The governor also usually limits the maximum speed, or it may function throughout the engine speed range. In any case, where a centrifugal governor is used, a lever projecting from the governor casing becomes the accelerator control of the engine.
In a motor vehicle, it is known to connect the accelerator pedal pivotably to the top end of a rod or arm extending through the cab floor. Below the cab floor or arm is connected to one arm of a bellcrank lever pivotably mounted at a fixed fulcrum point, the other arm of the bellcrank lever being pivoted e.g. to a rod for actuating the engine governor. The function of the bellcrank lever is to convert the substantially vertical motion of the pedal-actuated rod or arm into motion substantially in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, so that the governor operating rod connected to the bellcrank lever is moved in the correct direction for actuating the governor. In the known devices, however, it is difficult and expensive to mount a bellcrank lever.
In addition, since the pedal rod or arm is pivoted to the pedal and to the bellcrank lever, it is moved not only axially but also in a vertical plane extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Consequently, an aperture in the shape of a slot is necessary in the cab floor so that the rod or arm can move freely in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, but this leads to difficulties in providing efficient, permanent sound insulation between the rod or arm and the cab floor,
Starting from this point, the aim of the present invention is to overcome the aforementioned disadvantages and improved a pedal assembly of the above-described kind, by simple means, so that the bellcrank lever can be eliminated and the aperture through which the pedal rod or arm extends can be efficiently sound-insulated.
To this end the invention provides a pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor, comprising a pivot for attachment to the inside of the cab floor, a pedal pivotable about the pivot, a rod attached to the pedal and curved to an arc centered on the pivot axis to pass through an aperture to be provided in the cab floor, a return spring to urge the pedal to an initial position, and a transmission element which is pivoted to the end of the curved rod below the cab floor, the transmission elements being adapted for connection to an element of the vehicle to be controlled by the pedal.
In this assembly the rod moves along an arc when the pedal is actuated. If the rod is given a suitable length, its end moves along the arc approximately in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, so that a governor transmission element pivoted to the end of the pedal rod below the cab floor is reciprocated without the interposition of a bellcrank lever. Another advantage of the system is that the aperture for the rod in the cab floor only has to correspond to the rod cross-section, so that effective sound insulation can easily be obtained.
According to an optional feature of the invention, the arcuate rod is a tube having a circular cross-section. Very advantageously, a bellows may be disposed on the pedal rod between the pedal and the cab floor. According to another advantageous optional feature, the return spring acting on the pedal rod is below the cab floor and is tangentially connected to the pedal rod below the cab floor.
Further features and advantages of the invention will become clear from a study of the following description of the single
Figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows a simplified embodiment of the invention. The drawing is a side view of the pedal assembly.
An accelerator pedal 3 which can be pivoted forwardly is pivotably mounted on a cab floor 2 in a driver’s cab 1 of a motor vehicle such as a tractor. Pedal 3 pivots on a pivot 4 held in a bracket 5 secured on the cab floor 2. An arcuate rod 6 is secured to the underside of pedal 3 and extends downwards through an aperture 7 in cab floor 2. Rod 6 is so curved and disposed with respect to pedal 3 that it moves along an arc, the centre of which is the axis of the pivot 4 of pedal 3. The end abutment of pedal 3 is an adjusting screw 8 disposed below the pedal on cab floor 2. Pedal 3 is moved back to its initial position by a return tension spring 9 secured at one end to the underside of the cab floor 2 and at the other end tangentially to rod 6.
The vehicle engine (not shown) is disposed in front of cab 1 in the forward direction of the vehicle. The engine has a conventional fuel injection pump fitted with a speed governor 10. The actuating lever of governor 10 is connected to one end of a transmission element 11, the other end of which is attached to the free end 12 of the arcuate pedal rod 6. The system is so designed that when the pedal is actuated, rod 11 is moved approximately in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, depending on the distance through which pedal 3 is moved, and adjusts governor 10 accordingly.
In order to sound-insulate aperture 7 in cab floor 2, a bellows 14 is disposed between cab floor 2 and pedal 3. Bellows 14 is securely held in aperture 7, since it has a peripheral groove at its end, which fits into aperture 7. Advantageously, rod 6 is made of a tube having a circular cross-section, thus substantially preventing bellows 14 from being damaged by the rod 6 moving inside it.
A hand throttle adjusting lever 15 is pivoted to pedal 3 via a linkage and intermediate element 16, so that pedal 3 can be moved independently of lever 15.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor, comprising a pivot for attachment to the inside of the cab floor, a pedal pivotable about the pivot, a rod attached to the pedal and curved to an arc centered on the pivot axis to pass through an aperture to be provided in the cab floor, a return spring to urge the pedal to an initial position, and a transmission element which is pivoted to the end of the curved rod and positioned, in use, below the cab floor, the transmission element being adapted for connection to an element of the vehicle to be controlled by the pedal.
2. An assembly according to claim 1, in which the transmisison element is adapted for connection to the governor control of a Mesel engine, and the initial position of the pedal corresponds to the engine idling position of the engine governor control.
3. An assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the rod is made from a tube of circular cross-section.
4. An assembly according to any preceding claim, comprising a flexible bellows on the rod for placing between the pedal and the cab floor to provide sound insulation.
5. An assembly according to any preceding claim, in which the return spring is, in use, placed below the cab floor for tangential connection to the end of the rod which, in use, is below the cab floor. – 6. A pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an
accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
7. A motor vehicle, such as a tractor, fitted with a pedal assembly according to any preceding claim.

Claims (7)

According to an optional feature of the invention, the arcuate rod is a tube having a circular cross-section. Very advantageously, a bellows may be disposed on the pedal rod between the pedal and the cab floor. According to another advantageous optional feature, the return spring acting on the pedal rod is below the cab floor and is tangentially connected to the pedal rod below the cab floor. Further features and advantages of the invention will become clear from a study of the following description of the single Figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows a simplified embodiment of the invention. The drawing is a side view of the pedal assembly. An accelerator pedal 3 which can be pivoted forwardly is pivotably mounted on a cab floor 2 in a driver’s cab 1 of a motor vehicle such as a tractor. Pedal 3 pivots on a pivot 4 held in a bracket 5 secured on the cab floor 2. An arcuate rod 6 is secured to the underside of pedal 3 and extends downwards through an aperture 7 in cab floor 2. Rod 6 is so curved and disposed with respect to pedal 3 that it moves along an arc, the centre of which is the axis of the pivot 4 of pedal 3. The end abutment of pedal 3 is an adjusting screw 8 disposed below the pedal on cab floor 2. Pedal 3 is moved back to its initial position by a return tension spring 9 secured at one end to the underside of the cab floor 2 and at the other end tangentially to rod 6. The vehicle engine (not shown) is disposed in front of cab 1 in the forward direction of the vehicle. The engine has a conventional fuel injection pump fitted with a speed governor 10. The actuating lever of governor 10 is connected to one end of a transmission element 11, the other end of which is attached to the free end 12 of the arcuate pedal rod 6. The system is so designed that when the pedal is actuated, rod 11 is moved approximately in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, depending on the distance through which pedal 3 is moved, and adjusts governor 10 accordingly. In order to sound-insulate aperture 7 in cab floor 2, a bellows 14 is disposed between cab floor 2 and pedal 3. Bellows 14 is securely held in aperture 7, since it has a peripheral groove at its end, which fits into aperture 7. Advantageously, rod 6 is made of a tube having a circular cross-section, thus substantially preventing bellows 14 from being damaged by the rod 6 moving inside it. A hand throttle adjusting lever 15 is pivoted to pedal 3 via a linkage and intermediate element 16, so that pedal 3 can be moved independently of lever 15. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:

1. A pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor, comprising a pivot for attachment to the inside of the cab floor, a pedal pivotable about the pivot, a rod attached to the pedal and curved to an arc centered on the pivot axis to pass through an aperture to be provided in the cab floor, a return spring to urge the pedal to an initial position, and a transmission element which is pivoted to the end of the curved rod and positioned, in use, below the cab floor, the transmission element being adapted for connection to an element of the vehicle to be controlled by the pedal.

2. An assembly according to claim 1, in which the transmisison element is adapted for connection to the governor control of a Mesel engine, and the initial position of the pedal corresponds to the engine idling position of the engine governor control.

3. An assembly according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the rod is made from a tube of circular cross-section.

4. An assembly according to any preceding claim, comprising a flexible bellows on the rod for placing between the pedal and the cab floor to provide sound insulation.

5. An assembly according to any preceding claim, in which the return spring is, in use, placed below the cab floor for tangential connection to the end of the rod which, in use, is below the cab floor. –

6. A pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a motor vehicle, such as an
accelerator pedal assembly for mounting on the driver’s cab of a tractor, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.

7. A motor vehicle, such as a tractor, fitted with a pedal assembly according to any preceding claim.
