This invention relates to the cooling of electric motors in office machines.
According to the present invention, there is provided an office machine having a casing and an electric motor disposed in a generally tubular housing which is secured to or part of said casing and has respective first and second, apertures at or adjacent opposite first and second ends thereof, the motor being provided at one end thereof, at or adjacent said first end of the housing, with an axial-flow impeller which is mounted on a drive shaft of the motor externally of an end shield thereof, and which, in use of the motor, can cause a current of air to flow into the housing surface through said first aperture, through the housing and over surfaces of the motor, and out of the housing through said second aperture.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of an electric motor housed in an office machine, in accordance with-the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevation of the motor housed in the office machine; and Figure 3 is a plan view of the motor housed in the office machine.
The electric drive motor 4 for the office machine is secured by motor-retaining angle brackets 5, 7 in a tubular housing,, which is formed by a trough-form recess 3 in the machine casing itself and by an axially extending air baffle 1 which closes the trough 3 A first aperture is provided at the right-hand end of the housing (as seen in Figure 2), to provide an air inlet An axial-flow fan impeller 6 is mounted on the 50 rotor shaft at the end 42 of the motor 4, externally of a corresponding end shield of the motor 4 and externally of the angle bracket 5 As shown in Figure 1, the lower side of the trough 3 is formed with a lat 55 eral aperture 8 which provides an air outlet in the region of the end 41 of the motor.
Formed on the axial air baffle 1 is an end axial-flow baffle 2 having angle pieces 21, 22, 23 bent out of it With these angle 60 pieces 21, 22, 23 a particularly simple mounting of the whole air baffle 1,2 is possible in that the end baffle 2 can be pushed onto the motor mounting at the angle bracket 7, and if desired fixedly engaged 65 therewith For structural reasons in the illustrated embodiment, the axial air baffle 1 is bent approximately to arcuate form, comprising three side portions 11, 12, 13.
In the illustrated embodiment, the drive 70 motor 4 may have, advantageously, two identical end shields instead of two different end shields The simply constructed axial-flow fan impeller 6 provided on that side 42 of the motor which is further from 75 the exhaust aperture 8 effects a forced air flow which ventilates and cools not only an overhang at the motor end 41, but the whole motor As is readily apparent, the impeller 6 causes a current of air to flow 80 into the tubular housing through the air inlet aperture of the housing, through the housing and over the surfaces of the motor, and out of the housing through the exhaust aperture 8 The tubular housing formed of 85 the motor trough 3 and the axial air baffle 1 is closed off at the motor end 41 by the end air baffle 2, which serves at the same time to secure the whole air baffle, in such manner that the axially approach 90 PATENT SPECIFICATION
1 582 300 1 582300 ing air stream is deflected to the aperture 8 in the direction L (Figure 1) In this way, an effective forced ventilation of the motor 4 is achieved and, as compared with the previously proposed arrangements of which we are aware, the use of motors having much greater heat dissipation is rendered possible The whole air baffle can be engaged on the existing motor mounting without special tools.
The illustrated motor arrangement is, we have found, of simpler construction and provides more effective heat dissipation than previously proposed arrangements of which we are aware By employing the machine trough 3 as part of the tubular rousing of the motor 4, the housing can be manufactured particularly cheaply.
Claims (1)
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1 An office machine having a casing and an electric motor disposed in a generally tubular housing which is secured to or part of said casing and has respective first and second apertures at or adjacent opposite first and second ends thereof, the motor being provided at one end thereof, at or adjacent said first end of the housing, with an axial-flow impeller which is mounted on a drive shaft of the motor externally of an end shield thereof, and which, in use of the motor, can cause a current of air to flow into the housing through said first aperture, through the housing and over surfaces of the motor, and out of the housing through said second aperture.
2 An office machine according to claim 1, wherein said housing is provided with an end baffle to axially flowing air at said second end thereof 40 3 An office machine according to claim 2, wherein said end baffle engages with a mounting of the motor.
4 An office machine according to claim 3, wherein said end baffle engages 45 said mounting by means of angle pieces bent-out of said end baffle.
An office machine according to any preceding claim, wherein said second aperture is disposed laterally of said housing 50 6 An office machine according to any preceding claim, wherein said housing is at least partially formed by a recess provided by said casing of the machine.
7 An office machine according to 55 claim 6, wherein said recess is generally in the form of a trough which is substantially closed by a baffle which extends along the trough.
8 An office machine having an elec 60 tric motor disposed in a generally tubular housing, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
