Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO
THE DEBURRING OF KNIFE EDGES
(71) We, SKODA, OBOROVY PODNIK of Plzen, Czechoslovakia, a corporation organised and existing under the laws of
the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:– The present invention relates to a device for stripping burrs produced by sharpening cutting edges of knives, particularly knives of cutting-off tools in cigarette making machines. The invention also includes within its scope a cutting machine when provided with such a device.
With hitherto known deburring devices for knives of cigarette cutting-off tools, burrs are not actually stripped from cutting edges but rather ground off by grinding wheels whereby the cutting edge shape gets undesirably deformed and, consequently the cigarette cut quality is impaired.
An object of the invention is to eliminate or at least to mitigate the afore-mentioned drawback of the prior art and to provide a device for deburring cutting edges of knives for cigarette cutting-off tools in cigarette making machines by stripping burrs after sharpening, the device having its drive derived from the rotor of a cutting-off tool head. The burrs are stripped by means of stripping rollers designed for rolling along the knife edge and for returning the burrs produced by sharpening back into the knife edge plane and into the tangential plane of a grinding wheel.
According to the invention, a device for deburring cutting edges of knives, carried by a knife head of a cutting machine, by stripping burrs after sharpening of said knives, wherein the drive of said device is derived from the rotor of the knife head, comprises: stripping rollers integral with respective ratchet wheels and mounted for rotation about respective pins fixed on a shoulder provided on a driven shaft; a pawl arranged in the plane of motion of said ratchet wheels and designed for meshing into teeth of said ratchet wheels; a tension spring fixed at one of its ends to said pawl and fixable at its other end, in use of the device, to the frame of said machine; and a stop fixable on said machine frame and designed for abutting the arm of said pawl.
The number of stripping rollers preferably corresponds to that of knives in the knife head of the cigarette cutting-off tool.
The merit of the device according to the invention can be seen in the arrangement of the stripping rollers which are caused to rotate in counterdirection relative to the knife revolving motion, and into the tangential plane of a grinding wheel, thus establishing favourable conditions for producing a smooth cut while severing individual cigarette rods from a continuous strand.
A preferred embodiment of the device according to the invention will hereinafter be described with reference to the accompanying schematic drawings. In the draw ings Fig. 1 shows a view, partially in section, of a device for e.g. a double-knife head of a cigarette cutting-off tool; and
Fig. 2 is a detailed view of a ratchet-andpawl mechanism at the moment when the knife is moved in the direction of arrow A for being stripped.
As can be seen n both Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the deburring device comprises a pair of stripping rollers 1 which are integral with two respective ratchet wheels 2 and which are mounted to rotate about pins 3. The pins 3 are secured to a shoulder 4 provided at one end portion of a shaft 5. At the opposite end portion of said shaft 5 there is secured a first gear wheel 6 designed for meshing into teeth of a second gear wheel 7 fixed to an end portion of a shaft 8. The opposite end portion of said shaft 8 is provided with a first, pulley 9 coupled via a timing belt 10 with a second pulley 11 secured on a shaft 12 of the rotor of a double-knife head 13. In the plane of movement of the ratchet wheels 2 there is provided a pawl 14 journalled about a pivot 15 fixed to the machine frame.
The pawl 14 is provided at its operative end portion with a claw 16 designed for alternately engaging the teeth of one and the other ratchet wheel 2. In the arm of the pawl 14 there is provided a hole 17 receiving one end portion of a tension spring 18 the other end of which is fixedly attaced to the machine frame. opposite the arm of the pawl 14 a stop 19 is provided designed for abutting said pawl 14.
The afore-described device operates as follows :
Sharpened knives 20 fixedly clamped in the knife head 13 of the cigarette cuttingoff tool (see the copending application No.
12989/77 (Serial No. 1528895) corresponding to the Czechoslovak Application No. 220576) come, during their revolving motion, into engagement with the surfaces of stripping rollers 1 which are positively rotated in counter-direction relative to the movement of knives 20, due to the engagement between the claw 16 of the pawl 14 and the teeth of the ratchet wheels 2. As the cutting edges of the knives 20 slip on the surface of the rotating stripping rollers 1 the desired stripping of the burrs occurs.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
17. A device for deburring cutting edges of knives, carried by a knife head of a cutting machine, by stripping burrs after sharpening of said knives, wheren the drive of said device is derived from the rotor of the knife head, the device comprising: stripping rollers integral with respective ratchet wheels and mounted for rotation about respective pins fixed on a shoulder provided on a driven shaft; a pawl arranged in the plane of motion of said ratchet wheels and designed for meshing into teeth of said ratdhet wheels; a tension spring fixed at one of its ends to said pawl and fixable at its other end, in use of the device, to the frame of said machine; and a stop fixable on said machine frame and designed for abutting the arm of said pawl.
2. A device according to Claim 1, wherein the number of said stripping rollers corresponds to the number of the knives of said knife head.
3. A device for deburring cutting edges of knives, said device being constructed, arranged and adapted to operate substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
4. A cutting machine when provided with a device according to any one of the preceding claims.
5. A cigarette cutting-off tool being a cutting machine according to Claim 4.
6. Cigarettes which have been cut by a tool according to Claim 5.
7. A knife head, the knives of which have been deburred by a device according to any one of Claims 1 to 3.
