Abstract

167,777. Bates, P. A. C. Aug. 16, 1920, [Convention date]. Wave energy, utilizing. -Apparatus for utilizing wave energy comprises pumps mounted on a carriage which is mounted on inclined rails so that its position may be altered according to the state of the tide, the pumps being operated by a vane, plate or float which is acted on by the waves. Fig. 2 shows a form in which the pumps. 16, which are actuated by means of a vane 28 connected by linkwork 27, 30, 31, 34, draw water from the reservoir 13 and deliver it to a pressure chamber 14 from whence it is delivered to a turbine 22, the whole of the apparatus being mounted on a carriage 10 running on the inclined rails 12. The motion of the vane 28 is limited by stops 35. The carriage 10 is connected to some point on shore by means of ropes 41, Fig. 3, and hauling blocks 42, and its position is adjusted by means of a windlass 45. The windlass may be automatically operated by means of a ratchet wheel acted on by right and left-handed pawls 48, 49 mounted on a rod 46 actuated from the lever 31. The motion of the windlass is reversed at high and low-water level by means of stops 50 adjustably mounted on the track 12 which hit against the pawls 48, 49 at the end of the travel of the carriage 10. The railway may be mounted over a cutting or channel, in which case the vane extends downwards between the rails into the cutting. Fig. 5 shows a form in which a carriage 54, having ballast tanks 55 and mounted on rails 12, carries buffers 57 on pillars 56. From the front pillars, a pair of slide rails 59 extend rearwardly on which runs a carriage 60 mounted on rollers 61 and carrying a vane 62. Pumps and turbines are mounted on the rear part of the carriage 54 and are operated by means of connecting rods 64 attached to the carriage 60 which is reciprocated by waves impinging on the vane 62. Fig. 8 shows a form in which the pumps mounted on the carriage 54 are operated by means of a bellcrank 66 attached to a float 68 acted on by the waves.
