Abstract

174,679. Porter, W. H., and Spensley, J. W. Sept. 28, 1920. Specific-gravity estimating-apparatus.-Apparatus for indicating the specific-gravity of water in steam boiler or of liquid in an evaporating plant comprises two gauge-tubes A, B, the tube B being the ordinary water-level gauge communicating at its upper end through the connection a<2> with the steam space, and at its lower end through the connection a’ with the water space just below the low-water level. The tube A communicates through the connection a<2> with the steam space, and through the connection a<3> with a tube a extending down inside the boiler to a point near the bottom thereof, and is provided with means such as a condenser D for maintain ing a supply of fresh water in the gauge A and tube a. The difference between the heights of the liquid columns in the tubes A, B is a measure of the density of the liquid in the boiler and is measured by an indicator C, which can be moved along a threaded spindle. The upper end a<4> of the tube a may extend into the steam space. The arrangement of the tube a within the boiler maintains the water in the gauge-tube A at substantially the boiler temperature. The tube a may alternatively be outside the boiler, in which case it is surrounded by a steam or hot-water jacket. Instead of using two gauge-tubes, a single tube may be employed which is first filled with fresh water as described, and then blown through and allowed to fill with boiler water.
