Abstract

177,292. Wayne, A., Wayne, A. H., and Berridg-e, H. C. Jan. 13, 1921. Type-bar machines for braille type; typecarriages; letter-spacing mechanism; spacekey actions. – In braille interlining and interpointing machines of the kind comprising a carriage which is provided with six key-operated punches and slides on a bridge on the sheet-supporting board, the formation of sharp braille dots is ensured by so arranging the spacing-mechanism that the entire spacing movement of the carriage is effected on the down-stroke of the keys, the carriage being then held stationary to permit vertical movement of the punches in forming the dots. The carriage 34 slides in guides 14 on a bridge 9 and is provided with six punch-keys 38, 40 and a spacing-key 47, the punch-key levers 39, 41 being connected, preferably by ball-and-socket or disc-and-socket joints, to punches which pass through holes in the carriage base 24 and can enter shallow pits 13 in a plate 12 on the bridge. The punch-key levers 39, 41 are pivoted on pins 36, 35, connecting side lugs 33, 32 on the carriage respectively. The key-levers 39, 41 are formed with slots passing over the pins 35, 36 respectively, and returning-springs 43 are arranged between the key-levers and a pin 37 on the carriage. The spacing-key 47 is secured to a lever 45 connected to a lever 46 by pins 48, 49 which engage the key-levers 39, 41 respectively. The levers 45, 46 are secured to side lugs 31 on the carriage and the lever 45 engages a returning-spring 50. The spacing-pawl 53, shown in rear view in Fig. 4, is pivoted on a lever 56 which is pivoted on a lug 58 on the carriage and is formed with an angular slot 59 engaging a pin 60 on the lever 46. The pawl is provided with a pin 54 for engaging circular notches 21 formed in a flange 19 on the rear guide 14. On depressing the punch-keys or spacing-key, the lever 56 is depressed by the pin 60, and the pawl traverses the carriage. The pin then enters a vertical arm of the slot 59, and the keys effect further depression of the punches without moving the carriage. When the movement is complete a pin 63 on the link 56 presses on the top of the pawl and a ball-catch 68 enters one of the notches 21. On releasing the punch-keys the punches rise vertically and the pawl moves idly into the next notch, the ball-catch retaining the carriage. The bridge 9 can slide on the sheetsupporting board 1 and is secured by means of pegs entering holes 8 in the board. For interpointing, a board having a different spacing of the holes is employed. Carriage-releasing arrangements; back-spacing mechanism.-The spacing-pawl 53 can be raised, in opposition to a spring 61, by means of a finger-piece 52 thereon, a counter-grip 71 being provided on the lever 46. A back-spacing key may operate devices for releasing the spacing. pawl and for operating a back-spacing pawl. Carriage-stops; alarms.-The bridge 9 is provided with stops 74 for limiting the movements of the carriage, and a bell 72 operated by a pin 73 on the carriage. Sheet clamping and guiding arrangements.- The folding sheet-supporting board 1 is provided with a sheet-clamp 4, Fig. 1, having means for re-setting the sheet when it is reversed for interlining or interpointing. The side edge of the sheet may aligned by pins 6, 23.
