Abstract
178,796. Goodrich Co., B. F., (Assignees of Geer, W. C.). April 19, 1921, [Convention date]. Balls.-A golf ball has vulcanized thereon a cover composed principally of balata or like gum, or of a mixture of balata and rubber. The mixture is preferably of the following approximate proportions : balata or the like, 90 per cent; rubber, 2.8 per cent; sulphur, 2.8 per cent; zinc oxide, 2.8 per cent; and zinc amyl xanthate, 1.5 per cent. Hemispherical cups of this substance are pressed on to a golf-ball centre, the mould being located between the platens of a hot-plate press and kept at a temperature of about 215 F. The relatively stiff cover portions hold the mould open till the heat softens them, after which pressure is applied. The balls are kept in the mould long enough to start the vulcanization without injury to the centre and are then removed and allowed to air-cure, the zinc amyl xanthate acting as an accelerator. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 11801/02.
