6216. Prideaux, S. H., and Barber, J. March 16. Bayonet joints; overlap joints with packing at base of socket; with valves. – Relates to bayonet couplings of the kind referred to in Specification 10,199/07, and has for its object to adapt such couplings for subaqueous use, as in diving – bells, or submarines, by providing the coupling with a selfclosing valve. A piston valve A, sliding in a cylindrical casing B, is operated to close lateral openings D and bear on a seating C by a spring E when the parts are uncoupled. Waterpressure outside the valve is balanced by air from the diving-suit gaining access to the rear of the piston A through perforations G. A like result may be obtained by providing the rear of the piston valve with a cup H. When the parts are coupled, the valve is opened by a member I engaging a projection a on the valve. To facilitate coupling and uncoupling, the pipe is connected to a sleeve K rotatably mounted on the spigot J of the coupling, and held in place by a nut L and sleeve M, the latter having a set-screw O. The female coupling- member carries a rubber or like jointing washer P.
