Abstract
11,389. Jones, H. Sefton-, [Nollesche Werke, E. Nolle]. May 13. Lasting.-In a lasting-machine having several pincers operated by a single member to strain the upper over the last, the pincers are first actuated by a foot-lever and subsequently by the power shaft, which maintains the tension during the overdraw movement, gradually releasing them. The several operations of the machine, with the exception of the setting of the pincers and the initial draft referred to, are effected by a cam-disk 4 on the main shaft 2, which is actuated through a clutch so as to perform its revolution in three steps, stopping between each. The last is supported upon a support 16 working in vertical slides on the machine frame. This support carries a roll engaging the surface 18 of the cam-disk 4, Figs. 1 and 10. The last-support also bears somewhat resilient arms 21, the extremities of which are adapted to coact with screw-threads upon rods 24, which are actuated by hand-levers 19 to control the position of the side pincers which they support. The toe and side pincers are actuated to grip and strain the upper by a common member 6, which is connected to a treadle-rod 7 and slides vertically in a guide-plate 8 fixed upon the face of the machine standard. The member 6 carries a roll which engages a cam-groove 10 in the cam-disk 4 and normally rests against the outer surface of that groove ; the groove is, however, arranged to allow the treadle-rod to actuate the member 6 initially. The pincers are yieldingly supported by springs 45 on the pincer carriers 5, and are yieldingly actuated through adjustable springs 51, which are compressed as the plate 6 moves downward. A catch 12 on the guide-plate 8 is forced by a spring into a notch or notches 14 on the plate 6 when the pincer treadle has been sufficiently depressed, the treadle being capable of repeated operation until this catch comes into action. Means may be provided for manually releasing this catch in addition to the means shown. The latter comprise a roll 28 on the catch engaging a cam 30 on the cam-disk 4. The overdraw move ment of the pincers is effected by a rising frame 26 co-operating with inclines 27 on the pincer carriers and sliding vertically in gnides on the machine frame under the control of a cam-groove 42 in the cam-disk 4. The tacks are driven from tack-carriers in the fixed pincer jaw by drivers which are spring actuated and released by a notch 36 in the camdisk 4, which governs a roll 34 connected to a plate 33 to which the tack drivers are adjustably secured. The operation is as follows :-The treadle rod is actuated to grip and strain the upper downwards, according to the operator’s judgment, until the catch 12 locks the actuating plate 6. The side grippers are then adjusted by the handles 19. The machine shaft is set in motion when the upper has reached a stable condition, and the last support then rises, forcing the last gradually into the upper and locking the side grippers in their adjusted position. The machine then stops. When the upper has accommodated itself to the additional strain, the machine is re-started. At the commencement of this second stage, the spring catch 12 is released, leaving the pincers under the control of the camgroove 10, which is shaped so as to allow the pincers to rise gradually. This they do under the guidance of the frame 26, which is now being raised and the pincers draw the upper over the insole and finally approach the latter in a direction approximately normal thereto ; the buffers 32 carried by the pincer carriers grip the upper against the last, and the fixed jaws of the grippers hold it against the insole, the grippers being then opened. Tacking is effected at the end of this stage, and the machine stops. It is re-started to return the parts to their normal positions. The tack guides are arranged in projections 39 on the pincer jaws and partake of their movement, in order that the tacks may be guided right up to the shoe while being driven. Specifications 2982/93, 23,021/06, 3696/07 and 3696A/07, are referred to.
