Abstract

10,096. Avery, W. J. April 25. Cutting stepped indexes.-Relates to a machine of the type in which the cutter is mounted for vertical reciprocation in a carriage which is intermittently and automatically moved over the book &c. The cutter E<2> is maintained bv a spring E<1> normally in a raised position within a carriage C<1>, which is adapted to be drawn along a slideway C by a rope D’ connected to a weight D<2>. The cutter is stopped in its successive operative positions by the engagement with studs P on a curved bar N<2> of a counterweighted bar N<1>, which is pivotally mounted at its upper end on a verticallyadjustable triangular frame N and passes through a slotted link G<1>, Fig. 6, connected to the carriage C<1>. The link G<1> is carried by a pin G pressed continually towards the front of the carriage by a spring G<2> in order to keep the bar N<1> in engagement with the studs P. It is withdrawn therefrom at each depression of the cutter E<2> by the engagement with the pin G of a cam M on the cutter head, and it may also be withdrawn temporarily at any time, by the operation of a cam lever L. The frame N is adjusted vertically by the screw device R<1>, R to the position in which the distance between a gauge on the carriage C’ and a gauge T<1> is equal to the length of the book to be cut, the position of the carriage C<1> in this operation corresponding to the last step of the feed and being denoted by a pointer V<1> working over a scale V. The gauge T<1> is secured to a carriage S’, which is slidably mounted on a guide S<5> and connected to a block S<1> sliding on a guide S on the frame N. The requisite pressure is applied to the cutter head E by a cross-head H operated from power-driven eccentrics H<4> or directly from a foot-lever H<3>. A removable cutting-bed Y, Fig. 7, may be employed, such bed being clamped in position by a removable side piece Y<2> carried by clamping-brackets Y<3>. The studs P, Fig. 8, may be secured to blocks K having a dovetailed connexion with the bar N<2>; or they may be screwed or driven into, or forged in one with, this bar. In a modification indicated in the Provisional Specification, the triangular frame N is inverted so that the depending lever points upwards, and a counterbalance weight is attached to the lever below its point of support. The Provisional Specification describes also the use of pins &c. on which the side piece Y<2> of the cutting-bed rests. By this means, the packing-up of the cutting-block as it begins to wear is facilitated.
