Copying and carving.-In a statuary-copying machine in which mechanically-driven tools and a guiding-member are mounted to rock in one of two pivotally-connected frames, the other frame being pivoted in stationary bearings, one or both of the frames are reinforced by a cagelike structure or structures. In the machine shown, the blanks and the model are adapted to be uniformly rotated in a slide 2 laterally adjustable on a bed plate 1 by means of a screw 2. A frame 6, pivoted in bearings 4, pivotally carries a frame 7 having a shaft 10 on which the tools are adapted to rock. The frames 6, 7 are connected by links 8, 9, parallel thereto, and are each reinforced by a framework comprising rods, tubes, angle-irons, or the like arranged in the form of two four-sided pyramids placed base to base and having their apices connected together by a tie-bar, tightening- sleeves or the like being provided to stiffen the framework. The frames 6, 7 and the parts carried thereby are balanced by a single counterweight 83, suitably placed. The blanks are first roughly worked by tools 12 driven from pulleys 11. The frames 6, 7 are then adjustably fixed by means of disconnectible gearings comprising a screw 42 engaging a pivoted nut 41 and a toothed segment 43 engaged by a worm 44, and the work is finished by the mechanically or manually driven set of tools shown in Figs. 2, 5, and 7. This set of tools comprises a tubular carriage 15 with rollers 16 adapted to slide on the shaft 10; the carriage carries casings 17 for the sleeves 18 of the tool spindles, which are connected by steel bands 23 so as to rotate together. The sleeves 18 are longitudinally movable between rollers 24, uniform movement being obtained by fixing the sleeves to bands 29 secured to pulleys 28 on a shaft 27. The sleeves 18 are balanced by a counterweight 32 sliding on a bracket 33 and connected by a band 35 to a segment 36 fixed to the shaft 27. A tensioning-strap 37, 38 strengthens the carriage 15, and counterweights 39 prevent bending of the shaft 10. The links 9 may consist of stretched wire.
