4437. Allen, R. B. March 22. Circular-saw machines.-An automatic slotting and cutting-off machine for making piano parts &c. comprises a rotating work table with hoppers carrying the material to be treated, slotting and cutting-off tools adjacent to the table, duplicate gripping-devices associated with each hopper, and a cam-device controlling all the gripping-devices so that a part slotted during one revolution of the table is cut off during the next revolution. Springs 9 loosely hold the work strips 8 in hoppers 7 carried by a table 5 rotating in a recess in a table 4, which is adjustably secured to a standard 1. Duplicate work-grippers, each comprising a fixed jaw 12 and a spring-pressed pivoted jaw 13, are provided for each hopper. In operation, each work strip 8 is carried past rotating cutters 16, 17, which cut off a previously slotted part and slot a fresh part. The lower jaw 13 is then opened by a part 19 of a stationary compound cam 15 to release the cut-off part. The upper jaw 13 is then opened by a part 20 of the cam, and the work falls by gravity on to the table 4, is positioned by a spring guide 21, and is again gripped when the jaws 13 are released by the cam. The cutters may shape the ends of the parts.
