Abstract

5204. Bell, W. T., and Jones, L. W. April 6. Balance or differential gearing.-The axle differential gear on a traction engine or vehicle is temporarily locked by a toothed clutch member which connects the driving-member and one of the driven members and is operated by a pedal from the driver’s seat. The central driving chain-wheel 1 carries bevel pinions 2 which engage a bevel-wheel 3 connected to the opposite road wheels, one bevel-wheel only being shown. The locking-clutch 6 slides on the boss 9 of the bevel-wheel 3 and carries arms 7 which are at all times an easy sliding fit between lugs 10 projecting from the back of the bevelwheel. The clutch 6 may be moved to and fro on the boss 9 so that the arms 7 engage with or are disengaged from gaps 14 in a circular rib 13 on the side of the differential driving-member 1 so as to lock or unlock the gear. The clutch is operated by a fork 15 carried on a shaft 17 connected by a jointed shaft 22 and bevel-gear to a transverse shaft 27 carrying a pedal 31, which is raised by a spring 33, but may be held down by a spring catch 34.
