Abstract

9499. Marks, E. C. R., [Franey-Shore Co.]. June 29. Fixed-abutment type; balancing moving parts; packing drums; valves, cut-off.-In a rotary compressor, pump, or engine of the kind in which a rotary piston core 25 is eccentrically arranged within a stationary cylinder 4 and is provided with piston vanes 29 slidably arranged therein and engaging the inner surface of the cylinder, the vanes are pendantly supported at their outer edges from arc-shaped shoes 34, which engage the inner wall of the cylinder and are supported in fixed relation to the axis of the cylinder by independent pairs of internested gyratory rings 42, 43 arranged concentrically with the cylinder. The shoes are rigidly attached to spindles 33 passing through the vanes and projecting through the upper surface of the middle portions 29. The cylinder has a recess 26 of the same radius of curvature as the piston core, so that in this recess the core fits tightly against the cylinder wall, and the vane shoes do not contact therewith. The member 5 in which the cylinder 4 is eccentrically arranged has annular recesses 8 communicating with an outlet 55 and fitted with hydraulic packing-sleeves 9 carried by circular heads 10 abutting the end faces of the member 5. Spiral oil grooves are formed in the outer surfaces of the sleeves, and packing-rings 11 are arranged in annular grooves 12 in the inner ends of the sleeves. Radial recesses 14 in the inner faces of the heads 10 communicate at their outer ends with longitudinal hydraulic chambers 15 in the inner surfaces of the sleeves 9, and at their inner ends with holes 17 in disks 16 secured within the sleeves 9 and abutting against the heads 10, thus connecting the cylinder 4 and the chambers 15 and establishing an hydraulic balance throughout the machine. Oil is forced by the delivery pressure or by a separate pump from an oil well in the bottom of the casing through a pipe 52 and channel 51, open at both ends and adapted to register with the holes 17 as the disks 16 rotate. The channel also communicates through openings 51 with a recess in the bottom of the cylinder 4, for the purpose of providing an oil seal between the inlet 6 and outlet 7 of the compressor &c. The heads 10 and disks 16 have radial slots 18, 19, between which slide packing- shuttles 21 engaged by the portions 30 of the vanes. The vanes have bearing-surfaces 31 which slide between two sets of bearing-rollers carried by the heads 10. A longitudinal recess 54 in the cylinder 4 is adapted to receive particles of solid matter which enter the cylinder. In a modification, the outlet port is arranged below the point of intersection of the cylinder 4 and core 25, so that the outlet is sealed by the core until a recess in the core registers with it.
