Abstract

191,712. Morsing, P. J. G. Jan. 10, 1922,. [Convention date]. Pyrometers. – One of the elements of a thermocouple consists of tungsten, tantalum or titanium, the other element being composed of graphite. amorphous carbon, or silicious carbon. The tungsten &c. wire is enclosed in a carbon tube 2 from which it is insulated for a part of its length by a sleeve 3. The wire fits into a bore in the lower end of the tube and has a flattened or conical end 4. The wiie projects beyond the upper end of the tube and is stretched by a spring 5. The lower ends of the wire and tube are covered by a carbon cap 13. Wires 9, 11 connect the tube 2. snd wire 1 to terminals 10, 12 and these connections may be surrounded by a water-jacket 14 supported by an outer protective casing 15, of porcelain &c., the space between this casing and the tube 2 being packed with powdered carbon 17 to prevent oxidation of the tube. In a modification, in order to prevent the formation of metallic carbide, the lower end of the wire 1 fits into a carborundum &c. block which fits into the tube 2.
