Abstract

Thermionic generators; coupling oscillating and radiating circuits.-The wave-form of the output current of a thermionic generator is given a predetermined form, usually sinusoidal, by modifying the wave-form of the input voltage so as to compensate for the distortion introduced by the curvature of the characteristic. The input voltage may be supplied by an independent source or by reactive coupling. Fig. 1 shows a sinusoidal output wave 3 produced by a distorted input wave 4 which varies the grid potential on either side of a working-point 2 situated near the middle of therising portion of the characteristic 1. When working with considerable negative potential on the grid, an input wave of the form 7 produces half-waves 6 of sine form separated by intervals of no current. The valve 9, Fig. 2, has its grid circuit 11 supplied by an independent source and is coupled to the tuned plate circuit 10 by a coil 12 connected for reverse retro-action. The barmonics produced in the plate circuit 10 owing to the bends of the characteristic are reduced to a minimum by the back coupling. In a modification the grid coupling coil 12 is replaced by a series of circuits tuned respectively to the various harmonics. A similar arrangement is shown in Fig. 4, in which the oscillations are generated by virtue of the back coupling between the plate oscillatory circuit 22 and the grid coil 23, and the harmonics are reduced by the reverse back coupling between the plate coil 27 and the grid circuits 25 tuned to various harmonics. The plurality of circuits 25 may be connected in the plate circuit, and the coil 27 in the grid circuit. The circuits 25 may be replaced by a single coil having large distributed capacity in order that it may resonate to the harmonics. The valve grid is given a normal negative potential by a leaky condenser 28, so that the valve only passes half waves of current. In the valve circuit shown in Fig. 5, the usual back coupling 29, 30 is provided for the generation of oscillations, and an auxiliary back coupling comprising amplifying valves with aperiodic circuits and interconnecting transformers is provided for the damping of harmonics. At each transformer the induced voltage is proportional to the rate of change of the primary current, so that harmonics are emphasised relatively to the fundamental oscillation. The number of transformers used should be odd, or the number of valves even, so that the voltages induced in the grid coil 35 may be in correct phase to produce a damping effect. This effect is much greater for the harmonics than for the fundamental.
