Abstract

2-thio-2-substituted- alkanoic acids of the formula in which A represents isobutyl- or phenoxy-substituted phenyl or C1-4- alkyl-substituted thienyl, R<3> represents phenyl, C1-4-alkyl phenyl or C1-4 alkyl, R represents C1-4 alkyl and R<4> represents hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl, are obtained by alkylating 2- (aryl or alkylthio)-2-substituted acetic acids at the 2-position, followed by optional esterification. The 2(aryl- or alkylthio)-2 substituted acetic acids may be obtained by condensing aldehydes (ACHO), haloform and mercaptans (R<3>SH), or in some cases, by reacting appropriately substituted 2,2,2-trihalo ethanol with mercaptans (R<3>SH). The compounds (I) are useful in the preparation of various anti- inflammatory agents.
