Abstract
A single-use X-ray tube having an evacuated envelope contains a cathode filament, consisting of a sharply curved metal wire having a thinned portion negatively biassed Wehnelt type electrode 4, an anode 11 and a target 13. The tube provides high intensity low energy X-radiation for specified applications. Electrode 4 ensures that upon slight continuous emission followed by a strong emission increase due to melting and evaporation of the cathode, the optical properties of the gun do not change. The target may enclosed by a light metal electrode 14 with an internal C lining and aperture to counter scattered X-radiation due to back scattered electrons. Be, Al and C electrodes are specified. The electron beam may be scanned. A magnetic circuit includes metal sleeves 16, 17, and flange 18 with e.m. coil 19, or permanent magnets (21) may be used (Fig. 2, not shown). Filament dimensions are specified. The target current may be monitored and used for automatic astigmatism, focus and alignment correction.
