Abstract
Furnace, particularly for burning waste materials such as wood dust or sludge having a sea-water content, liable to cause rapid deterioration of conventional refractory furnace linings has an innermost wall lining (19) at least in the hottest region of its combustion chamber (10) formed from a refractory material, preferably high alumina content chemically bonded material which is installed in plastic, castable, mouldable or rammable condition, tightly packed around piping (20) in which cooling medium (e.g. water) is operatively circulated. The operating temperature is increased substantially above the nominal working temperature of that refractory uncooled so that the surface of said lining is molten or softened and the thickness of the layer is allowed to fluctuate between predetermined limits dependent on the temperature gradient across the thickness of the lining, any chemical attack on the soft or liquid phase thereof, and any accretions of molten residues of combustion. A cyclonic furnace is preferred with the hottest combustion products being swept helically downwards over the walls of a cylindrical combustion chamber.
