Abstract
The device comprises a punch guide plate 9 and a complementary holder ring 2 between which is located a workpiece 5, such as a dish, of unfired ceramic material. Upon lowering of a press post 13 punches 6, guided in the guide plate 9, are caused to extend through and perforate the workpiece 5. The punches 6 are in groups connected to respective punch plates 7 which in turn are connected by respective bolts to the post 13. The guide plate 9, the punches 6 and the holder ring 2 are made of plastics material, being produced, for instance, by preparing accurate plaster of paris models and using such models to form casting moulds from which the said plastic parts are moulded.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for punching out perforated patterns and method of making such a device
This invention relates to a device for punchingout perforate patterns on articles made of unfired ceramic material, in which punches are mounted so as to be displaceable in guides, and to a method of producing such a device.
Devices of the aforementioned kind have, in the pase, always been made of brass. Because of this, an accurate fit, between the punches and a punch guide plate in which the punches are guided, as well as opening in a supporting plate or in a complementary holder or back-stop ring for the article, is very difficult to produce, especially because the devices normally require numerous punches of the most varied cross-sections, often having curved contours, to be provided. The individual brass punches, and also the guide plates associated therewith, as well as the openings in the holder ring or back-stop ring must accordingly, always be worked by hand, in order to achieve the absolutely necessary accurate sliding fit of the punches.
Furthermore, it is necessary to solder the brass punches in groups to a punch plate. Since the number of punches that can be connected to a punch plate is limited by practical production reasons-depending upon the sizes of the punch cross-sections no more than about 10 punches can usually be soldered to such a punch plate-also, the assembly of the device, by means of which, for example, an entire edge of a porcelain plate or tray or dish is to be punched, can be very complicated.
This has led to the fact that, in the production of porcelain crockery (which term comprises plates or dishes) or the kind having an edge which is perforated in filigree manner, it has been necessary to restrict the production to just a few patterns, for economic reasons, even though manufacturers wouid gladly like to incorporate further filigree patterns into their production programmes, in order to increase their sales potentials.
Devices of the kind described at the introduction hereof are described, for example, in the Specifications of German Patents Nos.
219,347 and 318,827 and Austrian Patents Nos.
37,317 and 47,552.
The problem underlying the invention is to provide a device which is considerably simpler to produce than those previously used for the same purpose, and also to provide a method by which the said device can be produced in an extremely economical manner.
In accordance with the invention, this problem is solved by the provision of a device for punching out perforated patterns on articles made of unfired ceramic material, in which punches are mounted so as to be displaceable in guides, characterised in that it comprises a punch guide plate providing said guides, and a holder ring for carrying the article to be perforated, and that said guide plate,
holder ring and the punches are of plastics
material.
As a further feature, the invention further
provides a method of producing a pattern
punching out device as claimed in claim 1,
characterised in that it comprises the steps of
making plaster-of-paris models of the guide plate,
holder ring arld punches that are to be produced
from plastics material, using these models to
produce, by means of castable, coatable or
plasticine-like kneadably plastic material and/or
silicon composition, casting moulds for the
manufacture of the said plate, ring and punches,
and thereafter using these casting moulds for
moulding the plate, ring and punches.
The advantages achieved by the invention are
considerable, especially in relation to production techniques. To begin with, the often very
complicated cross-sectional shapes of the punches can be reproduced very accurately on a punch
model, consisting of plaster of paris (or gypsum), because the plaster of paris model is readily workable because of its relatively-slight hardness.
In this connection it must be borne in mind that the edge perforations of decorative or ornamental porcelain will not necessarily have geometrically simple shapes; in order to enhance the decorative effect, they are often required to be equipped with edges which are curved or contoured in the most varied shapes. Of course, in the dimensioning of the plaster of paris model for the punch, subsequent shrinkage of the plastics material must be taken into consideration. However, from experience this does not present the model builder with any difficulties.
In the same way, the respective punch plate, the punch guide plate and the counter-holder ring can be produced with great accuracy of shape as a plaster of paris model. Each of these plaster of paris models has cast-around a rubber composition and thus a casting mould is produced which serves for the moulding of the parts of the device that are required to be produced. Practical tests have shown that the resistance to wear of a device, produced from plastics material in the manner in accordance with the invention, for the punching-out of ceramic substances is then not significantly inferior, if at all, to the known devices made from brass or other metals.
The device in accordance with the invention can be produced at only a fraction of the cost of one consisting of brass parts or metal parts.
Because the punching tools of the invention can be produced so inexpensively, it is practical to adopt a policy of exchanging any tool parts which, as a result of wear, are no longer of accurate fit.
This represents a further considerable advantage as compared with the tool parts previously consisting of metal, since reworking of the parts can be carried out to achieve renewed edge sharpness, but only at the expense of accuracy of fit. Because of the high production costs of the metal punching tools, in the course of time the original accuracy of fit had to be relaxed, which led to deterioration in quality.
By use of the device, in accordance with the
invention, made from plastics material, on the one
hand one can extend considerably the range of perforated porcelains which can practically be produced, and on the other hand exactness of the perforated pattern can be guaranteed or improved.
at economical expense.
Shown in the accompanying drawings is a
preferred embodiment of the device of the invention, with reference to which the principal components of the device and its mode operation
will be explained. In the drawings:
Fig. lisa side view of the preferred embodiment of the punching device in its closed condition (the working condition);
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view comparable with Fig. 1 but showing the device in its opened condition; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation, to an enlarged scale, illustrating the punching tool of the device of Fig. 1 in the closed condition.
As shown, the preferred embodiment of the perforated pattern punching out (or stamping out) device of the invention comprises a holder ring 2 mounted, so as to be easily exchangeable, by pillars 3 on a base plate 1. . As can be seen particularly from Fig. 3, working both in the holder ring 2 and in a punch guide plate 9, with which the holder ring 2 is complementary, are registering respective perforations which correspond to an edge patterning 4 that is to be punched out or stamped out and which in its turn corresponds exactly to a pattem which is to be punched into the edge of an unfired ceramic article such as a plate 5.
The punching-out of this edge patterning is effected by means of punches which combined in groups, are fastened to respective punch plates 7, and which, upon a lowering movement, extend through openings 8 in the punch guide plate 9, after the edge patterning 4 of the plate 5 has been punched out. This condition is illustrated to a larger scale in Fig. 4.
The punch plates 7 are connected by means of respective bolts 10 to press post 1 3.
After the punching operation has been effected, as shown in Fig. 3, the plate 5 is raised, by means of a vertically displaceable ejector plate 11, out of the complementary holder ring 2, whereupon it can be removed by hand so that a fresh plate 5 can be loaded in place for punching.
The actuation of the punching tool is effected by means of the rocking or swivel lever 12.
The holder ring 2, the punches 6 and the punch.
guide plate 9, which are the components forming the actual tool, consist of plastics material. They are preferably made by firstly producing accurate plaster of paris models of the components. These models are then used producing respective casting moulds by casting castable, coatable or kneadable synthetic plastic material and/or silicone rubber composition therearound, and then using these casting moulds forthe production of the plastics
components, for example from polypropylene, polyamide or other suitable plastics material
