1,003,456. Sterilizing liquids. F. SCHULZ. Jan. 3, 1964 [Jan. 11, 1963], No. 339/64. Heading A2D. A method of sterilizing or pasteurizing liquids such as milk, milk products including coffee, cocoa and chocolate, liquids for producing fruit juice, and liquid foodstuffs, comprises the steps of subjecting the liquid to a pressure of at least 2 atmospheres, preheating it to a temperature not exceeding 65‹C., subjecting it to a cavitation treatment carried out in at least one stage with a pressure consumption of 1-10 atmospheres per stage and under a back pressure of 2-10 atmospheres acting on each stage, and then partly cooling the liquid, and the liquid is subjected before and/or after the cavitation treatment to a heating to a temperature not exceeding 140‹C. and at a pressure of at least 2 atmospheres in at least one stage and is homogenized before one stage of the cavitation treatment. In the sterilizing or pasteurizing of milk and liquid milk products the liquid is preheated to a temperature of between 30‹C. and 65‹C. and is heated to a temperature not in excess of 135‹C. In the case of sterilization, the treated liquid is preferably pressurerelieved and degasified before it is filled into containers, and is cooled, after such pressure-relieving and degasifying, to the temperature at which it is to be filled into the containers.
