Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula where R represents an alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy-alkyl, alkylthio – alkyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl group, containing 1-8 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or an alkoxy group having 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 2-7 and the iodine atom is in the meta or para position with regard to the carboxyl group, which are prepared either by reacting a substituted benzoyl halide with the ester of a hydroxy acid in the presence of a base, or by reacting the metal salt of a substituted benzoic acid with the ester of a halo acid. The hydroxy acid esters may be prepared by reacting the appropriate lactone and alcohol in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The halo-acid esters may be prepared by esterification of the appropriate acid with an alcohol, by reacting the appropriate lactone and alcohol in the presence of a hydrogen halide, or by reacting a halo-acid nitrile with an alcohol in the presence of sulphuric acid.ALSO:X-ray contrast media particularly applicable as myelographic agents comprise compounds of formula in which R represents an alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy-alkyl alkylthio-alkyl or tetrahydrofurfuryl group, containg 1-8 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or an alkoxy group having 1-4 carbon atoms n is 2-7, and the iodine atom is in the meta or para position with respect to the carboxyl group, and a carrier.
