Abstract
A method of producing foundry sand cores or moulds comprises forming a mixture of sand and 1-15% of a water hardenable cement of magnesium oxide or zinc oxide with a magnesium salt, a zinc salt, or calcium carbonate, 1-10% of water and 0.1-10% of an organic binder shaping, and hardening, as by CO2. The magnesium or zinc salts may be chlorides, sulphates, phosphates, silicates and nitrates. The organic binder may be a water-soluble polysaccharide or polysaccharide derivative, for example a cellulose derivative such as ethyl-, methyl-, hydroxethyl-, ethylhydroxyethyl-, or carboxymethyl-, cellulose, starch, alginic acid, dextrin, sugar, molasses or sulphite waste liquor. Other binders include thermosetting or thermoplastic resins such as phenolic, melamine, urea formaldehyde, furfural polyvinyl or acrylic, resins, or oil binders. The mix may include other inorganic binders or additives such as plaster of Paris, Portland cement, lime, waterglass or a clay, and wetting agents and kerosene as a release agent. For CO2 hardening the mix may contain an organic base or salt thereof such as triethanolamine as an accelerator. Numerous examples are quoted.
